Can somebody tell me what weed this is, and how to kill it? It's been encroaching on my backyard since I moved in to this house and is now trying to fully take over. Any help/advice would be much appreciated.

I don't know what it is, but 2,4,d will almost certainly kill it.  Get the liquid concentrate at a farm supply store (it's cheap), and a sprayer, and spray away.  It will die.

Permanently or will this be a yearly thing?

It's a broad leaf weed. Kill it with any broad leaf killer "Ortho Weed-Stop" for instance, and then you gotta get your lawn healthy so it chokes it out if it tries to grow back.

ETA: Ortho Weed-B-Gone or Spectracide Weed-Stop.

You can buy the spray bottle that attaches to your hose, and you can spray the whole lawn down. Or, you can buy pre-mixed with a spray nozzle. Either way, it's 2-4-D and GTG.

2-4-D

Or just keep it mowed. Who cares? It's green.

I'm going to try something like this this weekend. Last year I removed a bunch of it by hand but it came back with a vengeance now that it's warming up outside again.

Get them killed before they make seed and make your grass thick and healthy and all weeds become less and less of a problem each year. But you will always fight weeds. It's just the way of things.

You don't want salt in any place you want desirable stuff to grow!

When it's mowed it does just look like a normal lawn but it's actually nasty as hell to mow over as it stays wet and really gunks up the bottom of the mower. There's none in the front yard so it's really not a huge deal cosmetically, I'm just tired of walking on it.

I'm going with chickweed or carpetweed.

I had carpetweed that choked large spots of my centipede last year.  Get on it now.

What grass do you have and that will help suggesting the correct herbicide.

The thing with weeds is you need to kill them early in the season. At this point your just killing them temporarily. Also, if your neighbor doesn't treat his they will always come back.

Tip:  make sure your yard isn't mostly weeds before you put down a weed&feed.  The little bit of remaining grass you have left will look great though.

Can't remember the name of it but I've found that Ortho Weed-B-Gone has worked when it gets in my yard.

Here's a good resource for identification

It does look like chickweed, as dirtnasty said.

About mowing...one common mistake is mowing too short. Your goal is healthy grass that chokes that crap out, and cutting too short hurts the grass.

Hit it asap with broadleaf killer (2-4-D), then raise your decka notch or two.

It's not Purslane. Purslane looks like a succulent when you get close, and has teardrop shaped leaves on a red vine-like stem. That's got very thin pointed leaves, and little white blossoms.

10-4. Gonna jump on it this weekend with the killer then start taking measures to improve the lawn back there. I probably do need to raise the mower up a little.

I've been fighting something that looks similar.  The roundup foam in the metal can has been doing a good job of keeping them down.  It's a constant battle though, the root system is incredible.  Pretty sure I'm getting sprouts in both my front and back yards from the same roots.

Generic 2, 4D is going to be your friend here.  If you're going to spray it selectively, use 5oz a gallon, with a squirt of dish soap.

Save the roundup for areas where you don't want grass. Get some 2-4-D as others have suggested. Some lawn mixes also include a touch of dicamba.
