I'm in need of a new string trimmer.  My strict budget is $150 max.  Recommendations?

I was looking at the Ryobi 40volt;

http://www.homedepot.com/p/Ryobi-40-Volt-Lithium-Ion-Cordless-Attachment-Capable-String-Trimmer-RY40220/204589659?MERCH=REC-_-NavPLPHorizontal1_rr-_-NA-_-204589659-_-N

Not opposed to gas, but like the idea of not messing with fuel.  I don't have a very large property, decent shape though.

Ryobi makes a quality product.

Stihl if you never want to worry about it again.

I have the Home Depot brand, and haven't had any issues.  Other than Stihl, it was the only brand that had a reputation of lasting.

Stihl, but that is outside of OP's $150 limit.  I have been using one of the Bolen's gas trimmers from Home Depot for the past 7 years.  It has been trouble free. YMMV.

This is the one I have.  I couldn't remember the brand in my other post.  It's worked well for me.

Yup.

Stihl is the only way to go. Buy once, and take care of it. It will last forever.

The Ryobi is a quality unit . . . the "Expand-It" feature is a great deal.

I have a Ryobi 10 Amp corded electric power head and a Ryobi 4-cycle gas power head with eight different "Expand-It" attachments that will all work on either power head.

I've got straight shaft trimmers, curved shaft trimmers, a hedge trimming attachment, two different tree pruning attachments, a bladed edging attachment, roto-tilling attachments, and a blower attachment (the only one that I've never used).

It's a great set-up as you can go anywhere, and do just about anything, with it.

I need a new trimmer also. Are the  straight shaft trmmers harder to use for a short person. My wife would be using it and she 5"7" tall

Or buy one every two years.
Mine was bought in 01 and has never failed me.
Oh.. buy the best line you can.

Pay $200 now and get 10+ years out of a Stihl or Echo, or pay $150 on some homeowner brand like Troybilt, Craftsman, Ryobi and have to spend another $150 in 3-6 years.  Edit - if you're lucky. I bought a TB lowes "deal" about 3-4 years ago that lasted a year.

I echo (pun intended) the posters above and advise you buy a Stihl.  Bite the bullet and just buy it.

I bought an FS 90 6 years ago.  My son refers to it as "The Destroyer of Worlds".  Even after a harsh winter, starts on the first pull, every time.

Every time.

Go to Home Depot or Lowes and handle straight and curved shaft units.

I will not buy a curved shaft since it would put the business end too close to my feet.  It also will not extend as far under trees/shrubs, etc

The one I'm looking to replace is a Craftsman.  I think I paid $100 for it 10 years ago.  It's been a champ.  The head is about destroyed and no longer supported/parts avail.  Engine still runs pretty well.

I have a similar Ryobi 40 volt unit.  The trimmer is dedicated (no swapping attachments) and I also picked up the blower.  (Had to order that to the house from HD since I didn't want another battery.)

Yes, gas rules, but for a 1/4 acre lot I am good with the $150 price and the convenience.  I can trim and blow the entire lot for a month (4 times) and still have a little charge left.

I had a Homelite gas trimmer that worked well for years but I think the ethanol in the gas out here eventually ate it up.  (I had repaired the fuel line and filter once, but then it looks like the diaphragm in the carb was shot.)  Rather than drop a couple bills on an Echo I decided to try the Ryobi 40v, with the bonus being that the blower is really convenient, too.

That's also a good option - Hitachi or Tanaka that is associated with Hitachi.

The Kobalt 80 Volt works exactly as advertised. I'll never bother with a 2 stroke again.

I had a Ryobi gas powered until that I got used and kept it running for another 12 years before I couldn't get it to work anymore. Upgraded to a Echo power head with the straight shaft weed eater head. Works great and super easy to reload string. I buy the premixed fuel in cans since I use it sporadically and don't want the mix sitting too long.  So I suggest Echo or Stihl if you can afford one.

I just bought one.

I'm very impressed so far. I sold and serviced outdoor power equipment for years, and this thing is pretty good. Nothing will ever best a Husqvarna 225L; so naturally they killed the entire line, but this electric is not bad save for the shorter than I like shaft.

This is what I got one year ago and it's been great!  I use the Echo pre-mixed fuel in a can and it's worth every penny since I don't use it enough to go through mixed gas fast enough before it goes bad.

Me too. I got so pissed at my Ryobi that I broke it in half and threw it in the trash. Then I went to Home Depot and bought an Echo 3 years ago.

eta: I've used Echo, WeedEater, Homelight, Ryobi and Black & Decker battery powered. I've "weedwacked" on my suburban 2/3 acre home, my 2 acre rural childhood home and for a job landscaping a large rural park. My buddy has a Stihl and it is great, and I would buy one if I had a farm too.

I'd love to up my budget, but I don't have one.  Lost my job a little over a month ago, this will be an early birthday gift from my parents, as my current one has chosen an inopportune time to self destruct.

Then again, if my employment situation doesn't change soon, I could take to lawn maintenance on the side, in which the Echo would be invaluable.  I could probably recoup the extra $50 in no time.

Sad part, is I knew better than to ask you guys....

GD'er:  "Hey guys, recommend me a Timex"
GD:  "Rolex or bust!"
