I've bought two pistols from the Cabelas at Mills Mall or what used to be Mills Mall.
Both times they escorted me to the door and then thanked me for my business.
Same with a few other friends I've been there with when they purchased a firearm.

IMHO, I think this is a fairly common practice for anyplace that is not just a Full On Gun Shop...
That doesn't mean, I'm saying every single retailer does it, it just means it is not uncommon...

Why are you shopping at a big box corporation any way?

What happens if you say - 'hey wait a minute, I'm gonna stop at the men's room to release the hostages?'

What’s the point of escorting a gun buyer to the door ?

At Sportsman's Warehouse yesterday I got walked to the door for a buffer tube.

"If it's in the case, it's gotta be walked to the door."  No idea why buffer tubes were in the case.

They no longer escort you to the door after you purchase a firearm. Is that because they leave the trigger lock in place and keep the key?

In the four years I've worked at Cabela's we've never walked anybody to the door, nor have I heard of any other store doing it.

Trigger locks and  four people checking the paperwork is courtesy of Johnny Morris.

How about charging 10-30% over MSRP on firearms? My wife wanted a G19 to go with her Ruger PCC.  Ass Pro wanted $799 for one.  Local shop was $519.

I've never seen a new gun at a Cabela's or BPS that was over the manufacturer's MSRP. Please show examples.

There's a lot not to like about the stores but damn y'all sure are full of bullshit

That's been their policy forever. I worked there in college back in mid 1990s and had to do it a hundred times. I always apologized to the customer and explained they made me do it and I'd get fired if I didn't. They always laughed and took it well.

Fun fact: the DFW Cabela's sells more guns than any other gun store in the country.

That was a total disaster.

Some of you may remember how they sold all their credit accounts to Capital One, who hired a bunch of third-worlders to migrate and service the accounts.   There were so many back-and-forths on trying to make us whole that they reached a point where WE owed them thousands of bucks, and they still just threw up their hands and said "fuck it, keep the money".   Their own US-based people didn't even want to deal with the third-worlders.

Never been escorted at Hamburg, just some tape over the case.

I remember the retards at sheels letting me bring an unaccompanied gun I was looking to trade all the way to the gun counter but wanted to trigger lock it and escort me back out when I declined.  The firearms manager was at lunch and it be 30-40 min.  Fuck that.  I remember the asset protection guy making a fuss at the door.  I just walked around him.

My mistake. I musta made it up...  So much to gain by doing so...

Since you are our resident expert on Cabelas or the closer thing we've knowingly seen.  Do you know, is Bass Pro planning on phasing out Cabelas stores, kinda by attrition?

The reason I ask is we have only one Cabelas that I know of in St. Louis.
Its in a failed Mall called Mills Mall.
I think it is the only legit store open in the mall.  The only thing besides that is a rundown skate park.

I've heard Rumor that they plan to shut it down when the lease expires and several times now including on the news I heard they plan to build a new Bass Pro about 20-30 minutes South in Sunset Hills, South St. Louis County.

It would be St. Louis' 1st Bass Pro.
There is an existing one about a half hour NW, that is like a run down Kmart.

Its staffed by what look to be high-school girls and the gun section by geriatric Duck Hunters, who seem fairly versed in Shotguns, revolvers and not liking anything not one of those and they love to tell you as much..

Of the two, I have always much preferred Cabelas to BP.

I wish we'd get a Scheels or however its spelled...

If the price is right, I don't care. The one where I used to live occasionally had excellent prices on used guns and had a Beretta sales event with better prices than any I was able to find online including shipping. They also had competent people working in the service department and would mount and zero optics to 100yds with a boresighter while I watched. Free. No matter where I bought them.

I know of no overt plans to close any Cabela's stores but who knows what comes out of Springfield, MO these days. Things seem to change day by day. I wouldn't say anything is guaranteed.

It is obvious that a lot of the changes are put in place by desk jockeys. The amount of hoops we have to jump through in the acquisition and sale of firearms and ammo is considerably higher than it was before BP fully took over. As a company, BP seems to be one of the most risk adverse I've ever seen. I fear for poor Sportsman's Warehouse, because they seem to be a cooler store than even OG Cabela's.
