She came home from playing 1.5 hr of tennis in dangerous heat. She did the same yesterday. Her hand was locked up, she couldn’t stand, cramping all over. Shit. She’s in real trouble. Had her slam a few liquidIV. I was this close to taking her to ER for banana bag. Electrolytes/salts. It’s what bodies crave. Stay careful in this heat, it hit her quick. Mid 50s |

Quoted: I spent Monday and Tuesday out all day. I slammed water both days but Wednesday at my doctor appointment they couldn't get blood. I’ve told my heat exhaustion story. It’s not just water. You need salts. You sweat out all your salts, water isn’t enough. Your nerves, heart, muscles, everything need those salts (electrolytes) |

I am seeing an odd trend recently where several of the women that I know have told me that they don't want to drink anything because they don't want to have to go pee. My own mother literally told me that (while she was in the ER for severe dehydration so bad it was messing with her kidneys.) Since when has the fear, the outright terror of urinating started to overshadow their actual health? PSA Guys, make sure your women are taking in proper fluids when they are in the heat and don't accept a lame, fake "I'm not thirsty." |

If you start heat and humidity exposure not well hydrated, you won't be able drink enough water (and your body to process it) to rehydrate. You have to go in well hydrated a d thenbtry to maintain hydration. |

I'm a very heavy sleeper. Takes a lot to wake me up. One morning about 3 am the dog woke me up by going apeshit. I noticed that my wife was not in bed with me and I heard a noise from the kitchen. Walked out of the bedroom into the kitchen to find my wife on the floor moaning & in a state of delirium. My 1st thought was that she was having a stroke or something. Ended up being that she was just severely dehydrated. She has has almost nothing to drink the previous day. She's been fine ever since. |
| Folks, I you are out in the heat, drink lots, and lots of water. I go through a gallon and a half a day when working out in the South Texas sun. Wear proper attire, including a wide brim hat. Oddly, a full brim hard hat is one of the best hats to wear in the sun as it allows for air circulation around your head and the plastic doesn’t transmit heat in to your scull. |

When I couldn't pee was a horrible experience and I couldn't see urologist fast enough. I can't imagine wanting to not pee, ever. |

IMHO most people tend to be a bit high on sodium, low on water intake, way low on Mg and K. (3700-4700mg potassium, 320-420mg Magnesium per day - depending on the source) It's a topic that's very worth reading up on |

With the heat here I have been drinking a bunch of gatoraid/poweraid. Also the poweraid Popsicles. Propel works pretty dam fast for me. For my dad we always make sure he drinks a bunch. Iv solution Propel Gatoraid He has been dehydrated before so we push him to keep drinking the above. With me being alaskan native I have to be careful. |

In my early 20's I took a trip with her out of town for a few days, Dad pulled me aside and warned me about it. Holy shit he wasn't kidding. I don't understand how a smart person has such a big blind spot.

You sweat out all your salts, water isn’t enough. Your nerves, heart, muscles, everything need those salts (electrolytes) Enough water can actually kill you in this kind of situation, by further lowering electrolyte concentration. This is the best electrolyte product I've tried. Has both sodium and potassium salt, along with a little magnesium and calcium and the right amount of sugar for fast absorption. https://vitalyte.com/ My only complaint is they changed the formula a while back to reduce the amount of sodium salt, but a little salt on meals and it's ok. Or add a pinch of regular salt. |

My grands and parents were big on keeping salt tabs stocked in the house. Living in AZ it was a life saving precaution. I do a lot of work outside, until I notice I’m not perspiring anymore. That ends my work, in a heartbeat. A Dr. once told me, salt tablets weren’t good for people. I couldn’t believe he said that. Water is great, but you must supplement it, like everybody has suggested. |

Quoted: Pickle juice Quoted: Pickle juice Saltwater with awful taste. Try something a little more appealing so you can actually drink enough of it to make a difference. You also need potassium, magnesium and calcium which isn't in there. Quoted: I keep a banana bag and an IV kit at the house for such emergencies. The real trick is getting one started on someone who is that dehydrated. The product now called Vitalyte started out in the 80's, made by a Doctor that worked with SoCal rescue folks. They did testing and found that oral consumption of the drink mix he came up with was about 90% as effective as giving an IV. Giving people IVs out in the field in a rescue operation has some significant hazards, so something that's close in effectiveness without those hazards was a real improvement. IV saline generally does not have any potassium, magnesium or calcium either for electrolyte balance. |

Been through 3 Heatstrokes and at least over a dozen Heat Exhaustions. Been to the ER last year because of it. Diagnosis was my sodium levels were really low. All that water was not doing it and told to add sodium to my 5 gallon jug and I also drink lots of Propels. Now the sodium levels are where it is supposed to be. It was funny hearing that I needed more sodium in my diet. Not so funny though when you realize that you haven’t been to the bathroom in 10 hours and the damage you are doing to the kidneys. |

Hand locked up is likely low magnesium or low potassium. If either of those are low enough to cause tetany, they are low enough to cause irregular heartbeat. Most middle-aged adults should be taking magnesium daily, and if you probably need potassium daily, especially if you take diuretics or some blood pressure medications. |

I always keep a few bottles of Pedialyte in the fridge, especially this time of year. Even if I don't feel crappy I'll make sure to get a dose. One time we went paintballing and it turned out to be over 100° and sunny all day. We had a few cases of water and a case of Gatorade. Between matches we'd slam 2 bottles of water and a Gatorade. Never went pee once all day. Clothes completely soaked, like literally drenched, in sweat. My car seat ended up soaked in sweat after I got home. But no one got dehydrated. |

My wife did that to herself a few months ago. Couldn't stand, slurring her speech. I thought she had a fuckin' stroke. Had an ambulance come get her and by the time I had everything locked up and over there she was fine after they pushed a saline bag into her. Scarry shit man. |

Had an incident just yesterday. My boat needed to go to the shop, and my neighbor gave me a tow with his jet ski to the closest ramp to take it out. We were at the dock waiting for someone else to bring the truck and trailer to the ramp. He wasn’t wearing a hat, and it was damn hot and humid. I offered him some water and suggested he get on my boat and get under the roof to get out of the sun. He did, but it must have been too late, as he started getting nauseaus and feeling really unsteady. We poured water on him and kept him out of the sun. It was several minutes before he felt well enough to get up and get into the truck with AC blowing on him. After several more minutes, he felt better. Drove him home in the truck and someone else took his jet ski back. That shit can sneak up on you quick. Scared the crap out of us. Be safe out there! |
