I've been thinking about getting a winch for my truck. It's just a '95 F150. 302, automatic. Nothing special. Zero mods. All I am looking to do is to have the capability of pulling a car or two across the yard or maybe move 'stuff'. No heavy recovery envisioned at all. I guess I could use chains but the winch seems like it might be more flexible as far as usage. Would a 3-ton winch meet those needs or should I be looking at something heavier for those 'just in case' scenarios? |

Just moving stuff around on flat ground, it would likely work. I use a 3500 pound winch on my UTV to pull small trees out of the woods. One of the issues you may have is weight up front in the truck-sagged suspension-more wear for steering/suspension components-etc. Perhaps look at the weight of the winch/mount/roller and compare to stronger options. OR--look at a stronger receiver mounted hitch. No front end worries. Leave in the garage when you don't need it. |

For the uses you described a winch in a box is ideal. A couple of soft shackles and Yankum winch rings, you could get 12k of pulling power. The nice thing is that you are not tied to a specific vehicle. Can be used to drag something onto a trailer, pull the truck out of a soft spot etc. Warrior winch in a box. |
| Get the 12000 at HF with the synthetic rope and call it a day. When you need the power, you have it. Now on a newer truck, you might want Warn or Ramsey. |
