OP any dog you invest time training and love into will be a great addition to your family. Mut or purebred, educate yourself and you will have one of the
most important tools to making your children better human beings. A pet will teach kids about love compassion empathy like no other experience. Also if
your kids can't reciprocate those feelings of love back to an animal you know your kids needs help. Good luck with some of the best times your family can
have together.

A dag is Australian term for an unfashionable or socially conservative person.

Big difference. Being cute with the word from that movie is old, worn out, and childish already.

Is there an official breed?

Looking for something that will grow with my kids (9 and 11) when we move into a house this summer. Research has included Great Dane and Mastiff so far.  Gotta be something with short hair.

I would think it would be a lab, since they are everywhere, but I vote for German Shepard.

GSD is probably the most popular answer here but IMO not the best choice for kids.

Before anyone jumps on my case saying "My kids can put their heads in my GSD 's mouth!" I have seen more behavior issues in that breed over my years working with animals that I would not recommend one. They need lots of training, yes they are smart, loyal etc... But I have seen too many that act like A-holes.

I would love to have one, but I decided and recommend more family oriented breeds like Labs (shorter hair) or Goldens (medium to longer hair)

I agree. Get a rescue. If not from Joker, then go to the pound. My best dog ever was a lab mutt with a white patch on her chest from the pound.
I have two friends that have had multiple Great Danes. They have short lives and don't like to play much, just chill. Maybe not the best to grow up with your family.

Probably shouldn't be any dog that has limiting features bred into them, and a breed that has no trouble covering ~20 miles a day when it's time to go.

So... the Silky Terrier I adopted (which would make an excellent family dog... but not a survival dog) would be out of the running.

Just today:
