While watches are obviously less expensive than houses or vehicles, an expensive watch basically offers you no practical utility. Cellphones provide time far more accurate, and you can simply use an inexpensive watch if absolutely need to know the time by just glancing at your wrist.

Suits. I now have to wear one practically every day.
If you saw someone wearing a sweater outside in the summer; you would think they're a nut. 100 degrees outside and I'm wearing a long sleeved shirt, a jacket, and the equivalent of a scarf around my neck. Why couldn't the tradition have been gym shorts and Hawaiian shirts for legal business. |

I disagree as one of those people. I did my research, the value has appreciated, and I'm halfway done paying it off. I couldn't have afforded to buy a house cash where I live, but taking on a mortgage and paying it off has been a good financial decision for me. I didn't vote. I love top tier stuff, even if I don't need it or can't afford it. I'd never buy a Rolex, but their craftsmanship is amazing. I can't afford a Ferrari, but they are amazing cars, etc. I appreciate nice things, and try to get them when I can. Usually they're for utility, such as tools. Tools make/save me money. Maybe dude owns a really nice house because he can afford it, wants nice things, and maybe even has a big family to fill it. Now flaunting your new KAC rifle with kahles scope and at the range, and bragging about it constantly is just a false status symbol. NV wise, I have no delusions of somehow being like "I own this, now I'm CAG". But I definitely smile everytime I flip them on. They've been a blast for me. Even 45-70, I have a big catalog of ammo for it, I love to shoot it, but c'mon what necessitates 45-70 in Northern Virginia? I just like it. I think it's cool, versatile and it's a blast to shoot. |

A more expensive car is not just for status. They usually ride better and have more horsepower than a cheap car, and often some combination of better reliability, more hauling capacity, nice seats, better stereo, etc. You ARE usually getting more for that extra money. Nobody can drive a new Lexus sedan and claim that it's not a better car than a Ford Focus. But if you buy a 10k Rolex, it doesn't do anything better than a $100 watch. It's purpose is entirely for status. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:
