He's not all that interested in the best of the best, so can't be too expensive. Maybe sub $500.
ETA...upped his budget. Thinking A300 Ultima. He had a ton of fun pheasant and duck hunting when I've taken him out. Now he wants his own shotgun. Would be nice if it was somewhat suitable for HD...but mostly will be a range / hunting gun. Obviously an 18inch cylinder is best for HD, but I'm thinking we'd want something a bit longer with a modified or so choke. Open to semi auto or pump options. Thanks! |

Sub $500, you’re looking at some flavor of Remington 870, Mossberg 500, or something turkish. I have a Remington 870 express, and it’s feels cheap, but it works. I have no idea how new production Remington QA is though.

Bring it up to $800 -$900 and you can get a great shotgun.
Something like a A300 Uplander from Beretta. |

Mossberg 500 with two barrels. It's simple, has an ambidextrous safety. One barrel is 18.5 inches cylinder bore and the other is 20 inches or more Modified choke or even better with screw in chokes. Your are done and did not break the bank.

Personally, I think bird/trap/skeet and home defense are mutually exclusive.
One wants you to have multiple chokes, long barrel(s), bead sight, and capacity is a non-issue The other wants a shorter barrel, high capacity, and maybe an optic or at least night sights. If your budget limits you to one gun, maybe find one with two barrels - an 18" for HD and a 22"+ for sport. Better would be an o/u for trap/skeet, and then a pump or semi auto for HD. You can get both for <$1000. |

I vote for a 500. New, they have packages with an HD barrel and a sporting barrel, and used there are a million 500 barrels out there in different configurations. I've had my original one since 1976, and have like 5 barrels for it, plus 4 other 500s that I use for clay birds, real birds, HD and slugs.

Either a Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 with a two Barrel set (a 26”-28” barrel for skeet/trap/birds) and an 18.5” barrel for home defense.
If they are a new shooter, encourage them to take some safety and then training courses followed by lots of meaningful practice. Rinse and repeat. |

Look at Franchi. I have a couple of them in semi-autos and they are great guns.

Mossberg maverick 88 2 barrel combo. They're surprisingly reliable and cheap enough for a new shooter to afford more ammo for practice or, not as much of a loss if they don't decide to go down the rabbit hole of guns.

The whole concept of a home defense shotgun is ridiculous. The odds of any home owner having to defend his domicile from invaders is pretty far-fetched. But in the unlikely event somebody would need to do so, any normal hunting shotgun would handle the task just fine. The notion that you're going to be clearing rooms and ducking in and out of narrow spaces with your shotgun is pure Walter Middy fantasy.
For $500, get a common pump (870 Wingmaster, Ithaca 37 or Mossberg 500) with a 26" or 28" screw-in choke barrel on the used market. Or, shop around until you find a good used Remington 1100 or 11-87 for your price. But the shotgun for the most likely uses: skeet, trap, sporting clays, hunting. A gun for those things will handle the duty of standing on the porch and telling a trespasser to "Git!" just fine. |

Eh, for $500 I'd say get a pair of Stevens 320s. A Security 18 inch for HD, and a Field for other uses.

Yup, you can get a pump action Remington 870 express magnum with 21.5" removable choke barrel for HD & trap/skeet for around $300 used. I have no problems with mine, it's just a simple bare-bones reliable pump-action. Pretty lightweight and balanced too. When it comes to home defense you're not gonna want to room clear with a shotgun anyways, just hold a strong point and defend and wait for an attacker to come within your kill zone. So don't worry about how long the barrel is. |

If you dont want to spend a lot of money, H&R Pardner Pump less than $200 on sale. Its a knock off of the Rem 870.
 Not joking.Or do the Maverick 88 with 2 barrels for around $250. If you want to spend the $500, the Mossberg or Remington are good option. Go with what feels best to you. |
