My first gun collecting be all was AK's, I owned many over the years, now I own none. I kind of miss them. My favorites I owned were the Polytech Legend, a Russian AKM underfolder PLO kit build, and a green Clayco. If I had it over again I would keep the PLO kit build, it had the original Soviet barrel. I probably will never buy another.

The only AKs I own are Izmash and Vepr sporters I converted, so Russian.

Zastavas are the best AKs in production IMO.

I hate them all equally but I’ve also shot damn near all of them including some unicorns like iranians and north koreans. In my opinion Chinese AKs seem to have the best stock triggers. Polish and Bulgarian are good solid rifles. Probably the best AKs that are easily available.

Valmet is probably best of breed and the only AK I would pay more than about $400 for.

Save your hate filled rants for someone who gives a shit. Im not a scholar of the AK. Im just a guy that carried them for years and shot a pile of them.

Its AR15.com I doubt too many guys will grief you. For daylight 250+ yardish they’re fine imo. In my experience there’s just no perfect weapons and you roll with what you gotta roll with eg SOG guys in Laos situation.

Serbian. Probably made by some of my relatives.

American DDI Ak47 with Hungarian parts kit and ALG trigger. With a Romeo 5 onboard, it's pretty damned accurate.

Valmet, easily the best.

If we are insisting on it adhering more to the original AK design, then the Chinese milled receiver Type 56.
Surprisingly high quality, butter-smooth trigger.

Available these days?  Milled SAM-7.

IIRC Mikhail Kalashnikov rated the Bulgarian, East German and Soviet made guns the best of the Combloc AKs.

I wonder how he would have rated the Valmet and derivatives?

Anyway if I could own one I'd go with a plain old Soviet AKM from 1977, my birth year and the last year of AKM production.

I can dig it. When I was OCONUS I only rated a pistol. An AK is way better than a pistol. Personally Ive only owned a Mak-90, and I built an AMD 65 and a polish kit. I really don’t enjoy them and I don’t get the love for them in the west. On the steppes of central asia though it’s best to roll the local flavor.

I have a Romi UF BFPU with donkey dong front wood, that has battlefield carving, from 1972.

It’s one of my favorite rifles, period.
It shoots great, is accurate, and just looks and feels the part.

It has a new US receiver, because no FA, that was aged to match. Just a beautiful ugly gun.

Stuff that is still being imported? Either a milled Bulgarian or stamped Zastava. Both are fucking tanks.

Russian guns are the coolest, all the variations and upgrades over the years. As mentioned, Chinese have the best factory triggers.

Yugo/Serb Zastava . I have 3 M70 , M90 and an M77 dressed up in M76 furniture.  I also like Polish AK , the Polish laminate furniture is some of the most beautiful on any rifle . ??

Probably Polish. I have an under folder I had built from a Polish AKMS like new kit. It is very pretty and shoots great with a Tapco trigger. I also own a Galil Ace in 7.62x39 that is awesome and I recently picked up a Zastava. I hold both of those in high regards, but my Polish gun looks better.

The only AK variant i ever liked was a friend's Galil Ace. The rest beat my face when firing. The Ace was also quality.

Bulgarian AK-74 triangle sidefolder.  Built by me.  Love the 5.45 rifles.

Least favorite- any of the underfolders, of which I have a variety.  They just kind of suck to shoot compared to a standard stock or sidefolder.  Not that I am getting rid of any of them, I just don’t enjoy shooting them as much.

Polish AK's.  I appreciate the ingenuity the Russians provided to keep the AK modern, but the lack of tooling marks and craftsmanship really makes me appreciate the poles.

This.   The Poles really did the AK justice in taking the effort to build the Highest Quality AK of the many nations I have seen.

It’s 2022 and very few still say USA. Funny how something this simple is so hard or not worth the effort in North America. Have not come across the Venezuela factory models yet.

Those pre ban Hungarian and Yugos were pretty damn nice and the Norinco and Polytech triggers are great. I still prefer the Bulgarian 74 side folders.

I like the DDR NVA MPi KmS.  The stock is extremely rigid, no flex, and is foldable.  I also like the narrow forearm and grip.  It just feels svelte and sexy.

Bulgarian 74 for shooting.

Polish PMKMS for looking at.

ETA: they are really all kind of cool in their own respects.  That period of time from 2005-2007 was awesome for being a poor guy who liked to tinker and was into guns.  It was pretty awesome being able to build exotic rifles for less than $300.

$59 AMD65 kits, $79 Romy G kits, $200 tantals, $90 yugos, etc.

I'll agree that my Bulgy 74 kit build on an NDS receiver is my favorite shooter (b/c I don't give a fuck what happens to it), but my favorite AKs are the 5 of the 6 of the Century Series I've have built and modified to arsenal and time period correct clones. They're also very nice shooters, but I don't wanna hurt 'em

Only missing the AK-101, but with Saiga prices what they are it might never get done

I like BC built ones, with parts from Zastava or Romania.

Still have a M72 to do. And although the top one is an Izzy, Izzy means something different with FALs and AKs.

Favorite "classic" variant is my Bulgy Type III build off of an SA93.  Milled and all Bulgarian/Circle 10 parts.  Such a damn smooth shooter.

Modern?  Sig 553R is pretty cool.

Fuck that bitch! This is Russia!

So I have a 1972 Russian kit, a 1968 Romanian under folder reverse dong kit. Romanian WASR. Yugo Pap SBR.

Favorite? I mean. If I would have to keep one I would say the Russian because of reasons. It will be worth the most.
