I don't know much of anything about New Mexico, but how does this happen?  Blue as a NE state.

They've been that way for a long time, relatively speaking.  I once read an article where the author partially blamed Georgia O'Keeffe; I can't remember much about the article, but they also made essentially the some comparison to John Denver's music encouraging liberals to move to Colorado and change it as well as several other examples I can't recall.  SC is having a ton of northern liberals moving to Charleston (and the rest of the coastal region and now also the upstate) and it's lost what made it Charleston in just my lifetime.

TL:DR- unchecked liberal cancer

I've only been through part of the state, but my impression is that it's very sparsely populated outside of cities. Probably a disproportionately high urban population. And retirees/snow birds.

The blue is spreading like a cancer, thanks to people fleeing blue from NY and CA.

Artists, hippies, poverty, pueblos, and shit tons of people on the dole.

Still very gun friendly, except the recent bill that enacted a waiting period if you don't have a concealed carry permit.

Governor is tarded.

More and more California plates everyday, for some reason.

There’s a very large Native American population, which ironically is very similar to an inner city population, as both have a history of generations of dependence on government.

Both populations have significant issues with alcoholism, unemployment, absent fatherhood, domestic violence, hopelessness/lack of vision.

Edited to add: as noted and other posts, it is largely an urban population as well.

Outside of the cities, New Mexico is sparsely populated. Leftists concentrate in cities. The city population outnumbers the rural population. Ohio is a red state, but if the population densities outside of the Three Cs (Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati) were lower than they are, Ohio would easily become consistently blue.

There have been a metric shit ton of people moving here (AR.) from California. When I talk to them, I always bring up voting and hope they didn't bring Californias stance with them. They always say they vote red and moved away from Californias failed politics.

It is a massive welfare state.  22% of the population is on food stamps.  They vote for whomever promises the most free government handouts.

Then you have the California's that invaded the state.

The gop party is rum by a handful of people that only promises lower taxes and not much else.

It's a little deceiving, Santa Fe and Albuquerque are lib shit holes with the most population.

Even know the state is blue, we have open/conceal carry shall issue no mag ban etc. With 1000s of Acres of BLM land.

I live in a totally red county, and enjoy my really low property tax of $920 a year. House, Shop and acreage.

New Mexico was recently redistricted (gerrymandered) to basically give the dems a lock on this state. A sparse population outside of the Albuquerque area and generational dem voting in many rural counties, NM has always been a blue state, is the rest of the equation. It has only been in the last decade that the democrats of New Mexico started adopting progressive stances, they used to be much more conservative or at least libertarian.

According to my buddy who lives in Las Cruces, they continually gerrymander the state to make sure the southern part can never go fully red.

New Mexico is an interesting state. High number of poorer Natives that are dependent on gubment spending combined with a lot of Left Coast types with Mountain homes in Taos or Santa Fe. Albuquerque since DoD spending in the 80’s left is mostly filled with inner city and you’re typical left-leaning suburbanite. The state is sparsely populated and doesn’t have a ton of job opportunity.

Ohio's "dense" rural population and a ton of small towns that aren't full of liberals are what save the state.

Everything this person said!

I love NM, been going there to vacation since the mid 70's but it is a liberal stronghold thanks to the cities.

That about sum's it up. Beautiful state, terrible politics.

Typical liberal state, run by the cities- Alb, Sante Fe, Las Cruces. There are alot of conservative areas but very low population so it makes no difference. Also a large poor hispanic population that buys hook, line and sinker into the Democrat welfare ploy. That state has so much potential but once again......liberalism.

I was born in Las Vegas NM. My Mexican half of the family live in Little villages around there. Super duper poor.  My family there are all gun toting redneck brand of mexicans though most of their neighbors probably vote democrat.

Also a ton of Native Americans that keep hoping the Dems fulfill their promises. It's the same problem we have here in my county which butts up to the NM border. We have the Navajo nation, who happens to have more residents than the rest of the county and they like to keep their people in office. They don't yet trust the "White Devil".
