I know I ate many as a kid in the early 1970s.   And the fried chicken was good, and I'm sure I ate the others like salsbury steak, meatloaf, and maybe turkey, but I just don't know if I cared for those much.   Of course I liked the apple turnover and hot brownie.
At some point my parents stopped buying them, and whatever replaced them I have no idea.   They didn't prepare a regular dinner like a roast beef until the weekends, since my Dad worked steady 4-12 shift for years

The Oncor chicken parms were the best. We would make grinders out of them or put them on pasta.

The turkey Hungry Man was a close second.

Definitely the fried chicken.

But those things had the best mashed potatoes ever.

We only got them for nights the parents were going out on the town.  Just about every month there was a dance they went to.   Italian American Club, the Legion, The Hibernian hall, VFW, the Polish Community center.   In the 70’s and 80’s the social clubs all had dances for holidays, halloween, new years etc.

We as kids loved it because we fed ourselves TV dinners, pot Pies, or frozen pizzas.   Oh and piss on the pot pies that didn’t have crust on the bottom.

I liked the Salisbury steaks.

I once or twice a year will make Salisbury Steaks from scratch.  They’re rather easy.

The only time I ever ate TV Dinners was when I was in college in the early/mid 70's - they were the only thing I could afford (or cook) at the time.
After college I have never eaten another TV Dinner since!

Loaded with solid nutrients, like sodium, sodium, and even more sodium, for that after dinner nap.

Ha! for awhile I was buying stuff off the Schwann’s truck for heating up after working a long day.  Ice cream and cheddar biscuits were quite good.   Their Salisbury Steak was so salty it gave me stomach cramps and the squirts,    That was the end of  Schwanns buying.

Yeah, I don't think they were ever great, but they meant my mother wasn't cooking, which was a good thing!

Turkey, because otherwise we only had turkey once a year.
Not turkey loaf-turkey.

Yeah, the shitty Mexican dinner... couplea mush rolls so non-distinct I didn't know if I was biting into a bean, cheese or beef enchilada...

looked like a dog's dinner, but the little compartment of beans wasn't bad and I could recognize the texture and flavor as "bean".

Corn always came out fairly normal and fresh in those things too.

I hated Salisbury steak

On the rare occasion I could talk my mom into chicken parm, it was store brand and equally barfy.

I’ll skip a meal before eating that stuff.

ETA: we were getting Banquet fried chicken for a bit, until the odd, non-chicken meat parts, like the back, were breaded & fried & counted as a “piece.”

As a latchkey child of the 70's and early 80's, I ate a metric fuck ton of Hungry man tv dinners. My favorite? The fried chicken, corn, potatoes and brownie one. The Salisbury steak was also a frequent menu item!

That would have been the Morton brand pot pies that only had a top crust.

Morton was the first brand to start using cheaper ingredients to maximize profits.

Morton frozen products were passable in the 60s and 70s but by the 1980s they had become so bad that they were nearly inedible.

Might have to go with turkey.  The salty stuffing, kind of soggy with drier chunks.  The turkey slices thinner than carved at home and all white. Any dessert was a treat. No fighting over portions.

Times were tough when I was growing up. At times a TV dinner was a treat!  I still love me some hamburger gravy over smashed taters once in a while.

I grew up in the 70s and we just didn't eat them at my house. Too poor or above it or whatever.

Great replies, I talked to my mom about the TV diners yesterday and she started laughing.   I also remember the chicken and turkey pot pies.  My sister and I would bake them when we got home from school…out the oven, dump them up side down out of the tin foil pan onto a plate and then burn our mouths.

Salisbury steak.  It was a treat back then.  Mom didn't work so had home cooked meals every day.
