Some people were recently convicted of trying to smuggle in a boatload (literally) of guns. The BBC has the following picture of what it describes as "AK-47-style assault rifles". I'm genuinely intrigued if anyone can give a more definitive identification?
Two men found guilty over UK gun smuggling The guns - 22 assault rifles similar to AK-47s, and nine Skorpion sub-machine guns - were brought into the UK from Boulogne on a 38ft (12m) cruiser, the MV Albernina, the court heard. VZ 58
Seeing more and more of these on the black market these days since the Czechs are replacing them with the CZ 805 and we bought a bunch of them for the Afghanis, who didn't want them since they are not AK's. |

I've been meaning to get a VZ58, and after seeing that pic, it should be an SBR.

I'd give my left nut for a pair of fun-switch Scorpions.
Those short barreled VZ58's are also pretty sexy. |

I won't lie, I would probably own one over an AK if they used AK magazines.
But they don't, so... trashcan gun it is for my 7.62x39 bullet launcher. |

Well, when somebody comes up with a magazine adaptor to use AK mags with the VZ, that day may come, but I don't really see that happening, as I can't see how you would adapt the rifle to use the more plentiful mags. I don't really see CZ making a version that takes AK magazines, either, considering the Bren is the new hotness. If I ever wind up with a 5.56 AK for any reason, it will have an AR 15 magazine adaptor, for the same reasons. I've got an SP-01 though, that thing is awesome. |

The media description is surprisingly accurate. I believe those are Czech VZ58s. I'm not even sure if they accept standard pattern AK mags.

Without clicking the article I wonder where these guns were going. Possible Paris style attack planned for London?

None. Similar design but better executed. I think they were the only Eastern Bloc country that did not adopt the AK series. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

Similar design but better executed would be the Finnish RK rifles, the CZ only looks like an AK from a distance, to a layman. |

The VZ mags are aluminum and better than AK mags. Unissued and factory wrapped mags were available for $15 just a few years ago. |

I prefer the VZs over the AK.
Just some of the cool features are; last round BHO, striker fired, huge ejection port, much more ergonomic safety, a milled receiver, and its still a pound lighter than the stamped AKM. Fun rifle. |

The VZ58 also shows up in the last Bond movie. One hanging on a wall, and more that Bond takes from bad guys and uses to pick off more bad guys at impressive range.
