See it all the time, but never knew what it stood for. Web searches yield the following: Single-Term Hartree-Fock Sonic the Hedgehog Freak Space Technology Hall of Fame Star Trek: Hidden Frontier I doubt any of the above are correct, or am I wrong? So what does it really stand for? |

It is like the holy grail of arfcom mental masturbation -- A complete breakdown of society and infrastructure which would Zombies figure prominently in these fantasies as a sort of generic bad guy. NOTE: Not to be confused with ordinary disasters such as floods, tornadoes, fires, ice storms, etc, which are no fun at all. |

OR... To some here it signifies a state-of-mind whereby they desire to prepare to weather a myriad of short and long-term disaster scenarios with the least suffering and death possible for them and their loved-ones. But that didn't sound as funny as yours did...

Let me rephrase that: SHTF is an acronym full of gut-deep meaning for the brave souls of arfcom. With earthy barnyard symbolism, it juxtaposes the graphic image of excrement splattering upon a household appliance to express a veritable ragnarok event, scarcely imaginable to modern humankind. As both natural and manmade disasters tear asunder the ties of law and order, masses of humankind sink into primal greed, wrath and gore, while the sturdy, self-reliant arfcommers natually come to the frontlines in the battle for freedom, family, democracy, and apple pie. Wretched post-nuclear wraiths of the undead masses, representing all races and creeds, fight against our noble, brave arfcommers in a gruesome and unquenchable hunger for human brains. The eternal battle -- SHTF -- stands as an allegory for the never-ending struggle between evil and arfcom.

You are wrong though. What you were describing (ie zombies) is TEOTWAWKI, not SHTF. SHTF most certainly does include floods, tornados, hurricanes and earthquakes. |

Oh hell.  Those a no fun, no fun at all. We are just getting power turned back on in half the state, and fixin' to get 3 to 5 " of snow tonight. I've spent half of the last week on generator power, and may be having to go back to it the way things are shaping up. So SHTF is just plain miserable. But TEOTWAWKI  Now TEOTWAWKI will be FUN!
