A friend on a road trip snapped this picture. What kind of tank is it?

I am not sure about that. The back of the turret looks wrong.

ETA: per the first picture on the bottom of this site http://www.tanks-encyclopedia.com/coldwar/Israel/M50-51_Super-Sherman.php It might be a M50 Sherman Mark.I

This tank is a M51. The Suspension on the M51 looks to match the one in the op but the turrets don't match.

I'll let him know he needs to work on his photography-while-driving skills.

Yeah. The more I look, the more it looks like a M50. The mantlet is wrong for a M51 too.

I wonder if it's the same tank from Military Vehicle Technology Foundation in California

Israeli M50 Super Sherman....

My guess it's a bastard.  Looks like M4A1 cast hull with M4A3E8 suspension.  Turret  missing the the large sharp duckbill of up gunned M50.
Bar welded to bogeys for blade or minesweeper attachment.  Probably some Israeli concoction.

Christ, four freaking answers in the time I took to reply. Never mind.

Very nice catch. That has to be the Tank in the OP. The Pant and Rust are all the same.

Wow. Really looks like it.

The picture was taken on the East Coast, though. Somewhere south of Connecticut, and north of Florida.

Yep.

Side on view. Same turret number.

Very well could be. I believe that collection was recently sold off after the death of the owner.

I found another picture of the MVTF's tank. The number on the turret is the same.

So, not only the kind but the exact tank and where it lives identified.

Impressive.

apparently the owner of MVTF died in 2009 and had everything auctioned off in 2014

from wiki:

On July 11 and 12th 2014, 160 vehicles of the Littlefield Collection
were auctioned off to fund creation of a new museum to display the
collection at the Collings Foundation headquarters in Stow,
Massachusetts.
