My buddy is going on a trek into middle earth... he asked me for a recommendation for a primary weapon and secondary weapon.

Im thinking 308

with a side of .357

PS.. He might have some encounters with Uruk Hai

yeah, .308 sounds good enough. but .357 mag might be a little weak, go for .44

Clothyard shaft and a blade.  Get a tier-one blade - it has to glow in the dark in the presence of the enemy to be worthwhile.  Blades without blue glowing are worthless in caves and other low-light conditions and belong in a trash can.

Orcs are slightly smaller than most men. 5' to 5-6" usually. The biggest orcs are less than 6' tall. 5.56 and 9mm should be more than sufficient.

The other thing to remember is that the average Orc or goblin is typically quite cowardly. Like jackals or hyenas, they're really only dangerous in groups. So if you do have an Orc incident, you're likely to be facing multiple attackers. Hi capacity mags are your friend.

ETA: of course the fighting Uruk hai and the black uruks of Mordor are more dangerous than the average goblin of the Misty Mountains. This goes without saying.

I think you want one of these... nobody killed Orcs with such efficiency as Legolas with his infinite quiver.

.300 blackout should do just fine.

If you are encountering dragons I would suggest a .50 in the back of the horse.

Depends on the kinds of orcs.

Uruks from Isengard are the biggest orcs.  Those from Mordor or Moria are less so.

I'd say 5.56 ought to be plenty for orcs, unless they are Isengard orcs, in which case .308 or .30-06 should be used at a minimum.

firearms?
maybe a 12 ga pump/auto with slugs, with a bayonet lug; rifle would be a .308 semiauto battle rifle.

handgun? Glock 20 ( 10mm ) for penetration and semiauto.

Limited capacity antiques that cannot use modern sporting ammo due to operating rod fragility need not apply.

This would be great application for an AR in 6.8 SPC and a Glock 35.

My hunter always used a bow (NE) and then 2 daggers for h2h for the agi+. He never wanted to be melee for sho. Damage and kite the orcs ftw. Tell him to remember his traps and watch his cool downs. Friggin horde sucks
