You see pics of our badass guys and they're all, "Sir cut it all off sir".

You see pics of Prince Harry in the field and your all

Is that British regulation? No disrespect to the Prince, I just wondered? Seems like a hassle in a combat environment

The British Army is much more relaxed with hairstyles than the US Army.  I'd rather my hair grew out in cold ass temps like found in Afghanistan right now than a farking high and tight.  High and tights are perfect for hot weather but suck ass in the freezing cold.

Well that makes sense. seems like the dirt and wind would turn it into dreads anyway. Plus I'd worry about getting lice in 3rd world hellholes. But yeah, cold weather would suck.

We had guys get lice out in the field here in the States when I was in the Army, the lice didn't care if you had no hair on your head.  They would bite you anywhere to include the private parts too.   The Army has some good insect repellent that works good, the permethrin spray is very good to put on clothing, just follow the directions and not directly apply to one's self. Lice can be treated and with the great medical care we have, the biggest threat from lice - Typhus can be treated too.

If they were SAS, there faces would be blacked out.  There was Ghurka troop along with Harry's unit, he didn't need SAS.  There are no finer nor tougher mountain troops than Ghurka's, the Ghurka's probably pray every night that the Taliban would show their faces so they could lop off Hadji heads.

He is an officer in the British Army, a forward air controller and a combat veteran. Referring to him as "the little prince" seems condescending. What have you done to trump his accomplishments?

I keep my hair quite long precisely because I don't get on well with the cold. On occasion I've had officers suggest I get a haircut, even after I've just come out of the barber. I don't know where this 'practically shave your head' thing came from, but the regs allow me to have enough hair to keep my head warm as long it looks neat. For some reason, in the US if you can't see skin, you're considered too long, regs be damned.

I'm pretty sure no Army reg says that you are allowed to keep your hair long enough to keep your head warm.

No hair can touch the top of the ears or the top of the uniform collar.  Now with it that short on the sides and back it would just look stupid to wear it long on top.  Just my thoughts.

The hair is a little wonky, but I'm not going to hold it against him.

He was there, dropping bombs on scumbags (with an BHP in his molle chest rig ), and he wanted to be there.

I think the dude's genuinely sick of being a prince, and wants to be a normal dude cracking skulls for what is right.

Commonwealth countries tend to keep their hair much longer than we do.  We have Brits and Aussies here and occasionally a Canadian.  The way it was explained to me was that a shaved head is the sign of someone poor who cannot afford a proper haircut.  I tend to go with the culture of the unit.  Right now I am in an Airborne Infantry BCT so the culture is "high and tight."  Not really sure where it came from though, it is a post WWII thing.  I have tried to research it, but have not found anything.

the hair thing as far as I can remember was started by the Brit SF, some guys still shave their heads but it isn't seen as a big deal when on operations we try to leave that sort of BS in the FOB.

Browning high power is the service pistol Sig is Special forces issue.

I served with the Ghurka's they do not have to draw blood every time the unsheath the Kukri it is used as a general field knife/machete as well as a fighting knife.

Okie Dokie

Haircuts and shaving: All excused in AStan as the locals regard a clean shaven man as 'unmanly'…

Sidearms: HiPower is the default. SIG's are being bought to replace them as they wear out, but the higher speed types and pilots have first dibs on them.

I've been told that a lot of the SF guys serving in the Middle East tend to grow out full beards and keep their hair a bit longer to fit in better with the locals.

Not that they disguise themselves as local Muslims but to help the locals feel more comfortable dealing with them.

Anyone know if there is any truth to that?

Locals do not trust men without facial hair.

You want to win hearts and minds... sometimes you have to grow out your "manhood" and "prove you are worthy of their respect and trust"

Correct, only boys don't have facial hair and only the poor have shaven heads…

In Afghans society, a full beard and longer hair is a sign of manliness and maturity.
