For those that have read the series, should I start with the first book or the prequel book?

The prequel didn't do much for me.  I didn't read it until about a year ago, where I started the series when it first came out.

I'd probably just go with the first book.

Others may have different opinions.  I'm just a casual reader.

I agree. The prequel didn't impress me. I'd start with the 1st book.

1st book. After you get to know Lan & Moraine, the prequel  makes more sense. IIRC

I agree with this.  Start with the first book and read the prequel later.

The prequel was better when it was a short story...

And it really does nothing for the story.

I will go against the grain and say read the prequel first. I just finished reading the series for the first time.

Definitely book one.  Reading the prequel first would assume you have a general understanding of the world.  It would also ruin the experience of seeing some major characters develop.  Best I can say without giving things away. I think you could skip the prequel entirely and not miss out.

First book. I didn't know there was a prequel! I need to read them all again.

The prequel was supposed to be a trilogy that leads up to book one but it never got finished.  Start with book one because the prequel doesn't is written as if you already know how certain things in the world work.
