I'm wondering when will the Collapse of the US will happen. We are 18 T in the hole as a nation, will it happen when the US is out of places to Borrow Money, and if so, how soon?

My friend who is an accounting/finance guy says that we can keep this shit up for a longgggg time before the whole shithouse goes up in flames.  Our massive economy's ability to absorb the impact of printing more money is unprecedented.  The trouble is, once it's done, we'll be falling off a very tall cliff.

His assessment? years, maybe decades...

My assessment? tomorrow...

So, probably somewhere in between.

Would it actually collapse, or just reboot? Seems to me a country so rich in natural resources wouldn't take too hard a fall. Everything would depend on whether or not we RETURNED to the principles that made us great. Something our precious little leftist population would have to be dragged kicking and screaming to. Then again, we could wait a decade or so and let them die off before said return to greatness. They wouldn't survive a whole decade of self reliance.

While things look bad now I kinda agree with the long game.  Until every lever is thrown ,ever button pushed, and every accounting trick utilized it will continue.  The interesting question is what happens when we step off the edge of the cliff?  I figure the rest on the world will be on fire by that point.

When one of the following happens:

- Space invasion (but when they see this place, they'll leave faster than coming here)
- No one can deliver gold to China (or maybe even Russia).  China or Russia then announces gold backed currency, inducing the world to dump the dollar
- Saudis dump the petro-dollar
- China dumps all its T-bills onto the market
- Fed Res raises interest rates (this will kill the derivatives market, stock market, bond market and housing market).
- WW III (great way to cover up the mess and distract everyone --- and get the population killed off).

ETA:  we are in the process of collapse and have been since 2007. Remember when Dubya gave tax refunds up to $700 to a lot of folks. That was the first outward sign of government concern of the economic slowdown. Since then, there was the trap TARP that shifted the burden of private losses onto the public purse.  Right now the is proposed legislation to shift derivatives losses onto the public via the FDIC.  Anyway, unemployment is over 23%, newly created jobs aren't (for the most part) middle class production jobs that pay middle class wages.  Instead they're service industry jobs (waiting on tables, stocking shelves, cashiers, flipping burgers) that don't have benefits.  We don't see outward signs of poverty like soup kitchens because that's hidden via EBTs, cellphones for all, etc.  If you look at Walmart and Costco sales, they're both down.  Black Friday is down 11% and the internet hasn't helped buoy it up.   Oh, remember the Too Big to Fail (now Too Big To Jail)?  Well, they're bigger and more susceptible to collapse than before.

The entire world is hurting and not just us.  The real question is will it take twenty five years to recover or will the American people wake up like the Icelanders did?

Agreed, I think we can double our debt adjusted for percentage of GDP.  Depending on how fast or slow we spend I would estimate at least 20 years and possibly 100+.

You can't fool all the people all the time, but you can fool enough of the people enough of the time to keep the system turning.

People wondering about a collapse are part of a long American tradition of apocalyptic fears.

18T is only the funded liabilities. The scary line item is the long-term unfunded liabilities. That figure is many, many times larger.

Soon the .gov will be unable to make the interest payments on our treasury debt. What then? Pols and people alike will demand accountability a decade late and a trillion short. The public will want an explanation of how it happened. Well, six years of running the government at 150% of tax receipts, de-facto amnesty, ACA, and all the other social programs that have been created in the last six years drastically accelerated the arrival of doom's day. Yet, ain't nobody got time for that as long as EBTs are recharged at the end of the month and the media is encouraging the entitled to burn down strangers' property by following them around and given their heinous deeds national circulation.

I don't know much but when we go down, the world's economy will also circle the drain. It's fairly scary to think one day, in my lifetime, that dawn will arrive. It's inevitable.

Edit: I watched this Jim Rickards interview today. It starts about 90 seconds in. He provides great charts and data to bolster his hypotheses. This is a sales pitch for this newsletter, but the interview is enlightening in regards to our current predicament. He is the financial point-man for the CIA. BTW I have no affiliation with this group.
