I am getting a Saiga in 7.62x39 that I am going to have converted to an AKM. The question is, which clone should I go for?

The options are:

Iraqi Tabuk Sniper Rifle:

RPK

AK-103 (with a 20" barrel of course)

I am leaning towards the Tabuk Clone. The guy who will be doing the conversion for me showed me his personal Tabuk clone that he did from a 20" Saiga and it looked AWESOME!

103. The others are unwieldy and useless.

Well, the barrel WILL be 20" no matter which one I go with. That is about 3.5" shorter than the RPK and the Tabuk standard barrel and 4" longer than the AK-103 barrel.

It will end up being about the same length as an M16 no matter which route I choose.

RPK.

If you are set on the 20" bbl then I say go with the RPK furniture.

I happen to like RPK furniture and it will work on the saiga without too much fussing.
The lower handguard retainer will be a bit tricky.

The Tabuk/Yugo furniture won't work.  So whatever you would do there would have to be custom.

AK-103, but not with the Bulgy brake.

I just bought an AK 103 with a triangular side-folder yesterday at the fun show... fuggin' sexy.

Well, the guy who is doing the conversion used Polish Tantal bakelite furniture on his, but he used some kind of acid to give it a worn, almost wood look to it.

The one he showed me was a very sharp looking rifle.

Tabuk sniper rifles are 2-4 MOA guns.

RPKs are stupid unless they are FA... which yours won't be.

The 103 is the only valid option.

Don't forget to post pics.

I love the looks of the Tabuk rifles, but that scope is awful.

+1

The "Tabuk" looks like junk

It's a no brainer. AK-103

I probably wouldn't put that scope on it. I would probably put a PK-A or something to put on it.

Get a real 'sniper' rifle... those are shit.

Well, mine wouldn't be a Tabuk. It would be a Saiga receiver and barrel, which would make it more accurate.

This is about what the 20" Saiga would end up looking like in an AK-103 configuration. I would have it moded with the Bulgarian gas block and front sight though so that it could accommodate a cleaning rod.

This example is a .308 though.

I've shot a few 308 Saiga's and all of them gave 5 shot groups around 1.5". I don't understand the desire for a 20" 7.62x39. A 308 would be much better.

I didn't make a deal for a .308, I made a deal for a 7.62x39.

I want this rifle because I want something that I can still get cheaper ammo for. 7.62x39 is still plentiful and relatively cheap.

.308 is hard to find.

The cheap x39 is inaccurate. So there's no point in having a long barrel. The 16" 103 would be the best.

I didn't make a trade for a 16" 7.62x39.

I made a trade for a 20" 7.62x39.

As for the ammo, even the GOOD 7.62x39 is only about $9/box at Academy and still plentiful.

Yep. Most folks with 20" VEPRs in 7.62 x 39 report LESS accuracy than the carbine-length version - supposedly due to "barrel whip".

Just about all the common 7.26 x 39 ammo is pretty much optimized for a relatively short barrel.

Tabuk, because it looks kinda like a Dragunov and I like the way they look.

You can get Lapua for $9 a box?

Cutting the barrel to 16 and reattaching the fsb is child's play. I'd do that.
