I've been looking at VR headsets for games. Could use some recommendations on what to look for and what brands are worth checking out. Checked e-bay, Amazon and did a few google searches, there seem to be quite a few different brands and accessories for them as well, but not really finding much info on them though.
From what I am finding some have a small remote control, I've seen something about a magnet for something not shure what though. Are there a good assortment of games and movies? I've seen the one made from cardboard from google not gonna get that but from what I've seen so far is Google cardboard the standard like an OS or something? When I searched using that for the search it pulls up different types of the viewers so I didn't know if that was a type of OS or what. Thanks for any info or suggestions. ETA: I will be using an iPhone 6+ |

Cardboard is just a cheap viewer using your phone as the screen. The next step up (also using a phone) are the head mounted units like Samsung Gear VR.
The two common/big stand alone devices are the HTC Vive and the Occulus Rift. They are a pretty big step up from the phone based systems. All of that said, it is still pretty early days. Both types need better resolution (phones are particularly bad) and viewing angles are still lacking. There is a bunch of stuff coming in the next 12-16 months that will be worth holding out for. ETA: Start out by buying Cardboard ($10). |
| Yeah I saw the one made of cardboard that is out of the question for sure. The ones I've seen on e-bay and Amazon looked pretty nice. I was wondering about the resolution, some have the adjustment I guess like what are on binoculars where you can do a fine adjustment for each eye. The prices I've seen on them aren't too bad so even if better viewers are on the way it wouldn't really be much of a waste hell $25 to $30 dollars isn't much of an investment I would worry about replacing them later on. |

For phone based systems, the resolution ranges from kind of decent (with the 2.5k Samsungs, etc.) to crappy (iPhones). 4K resolution is needed and is coming next year in most phones (there are a few that offer it now). ETA: The headsets just hold the device on your head. The phone is what matters. |

I've got an iPhone 6 and it is usable/engaging, but there is a pretty significant screen door effect (they didn't upgrade the resolution with the iPhone 7 either). You can still enjoy stuff (360 degree vids, etc.), but there is no reason to spend much money on a headset. Get a Cardboard and try it out (it is pretty damn impressive/immersive with headphones...despite the resolution issue). |
