I have one of the latter in the bathroom, , It REALLY sucks down the power.  Are we talking short term heating, (an hour or so in the morning) or all day?

Well, for the real answer you either need a clamp-on ammeter or know the power consumption (watts) of both devices.

It will cost more to heat the whole house than it will to heat one room with an electric heater.

Wait, now I see you say one room with the central unit, only way to tell is by trying it.
