Baron Von Richthofen

Not a classic gun fighter, but a gunfighter none the less.

But I'll wager the best gunfighter, isn't recorded in the books anywhere.

Rather than special forces, how about someone like David Bellavia going into a house containing 6 insurgents and killing 5 of them by himself? He went into the house alone. When he went in, he had few fully loaded mags, some partially loaded, and one grenade. His night vision went out while it was going down.

I’m sure I read a story in here years ago about a downed helicopter in Vietnam

One of the passengers was a pistol competitor of some sort hadhis 1911 with him and loads of ammo one other survivor loaded mags for him and he killed around 60 VC iirc from around 100yards.

Never been able  to find That story again.

I believe the moniker "gunfighter" refers specifically to gunslingers of the old west.

We've probably never heard the guy's name because the gun fights are still classified.

With the GWOT heading toward 20 years some guys could have been doing DA for nearly their whole careers.  That's a shit load of gun fights.

Simo was a killer....not sure you can call a sniper a "gunfighter".

A sniper and a gunfighter are two different things. Gunfighter typically refers to someone who is fighting close in and usually with weapons like pistols, shotguns or carbines (hell, the Spanish for a gunfighter is pistolero). As such I'm not sure a lot of soldiers in war would necessarily count as "gunfighters" either.

Hamer was most likely the best gunfighter in the USA.

Many SOF have been in more gunfights in a single deployment.
