Yes,you left out Bushmaster. They made some in the 90's for the military until the quality of their bolts was considered to poor to use. That and Colt upped the manufacturing. The few Bushmasters still floating around in soldiers hands have Colt bolts installed.

Colt will be making military weapons for a long time.

We won't be switching wholesale anytime soon.  But to answer your question, probably FN.

I thought I read somewhere, that there was to be a carbine competition this spring, for an M4 replacement.

ACR?

My guess would be the SCAR since it's already been adopted by at least some of SOCOM.  But in reality, I don't see a replacement coming any time soon, for either the M4 or the M9.

SCAR, maybe.
Maybe not.
I don't see the M4 going away anytime soon.

Wasn't the HK45, the new one, designed to complete in a new handgun trial that was cancelled because the military realized it would cost too much money to replace all of the M9s? I thought I remember hearing this some time back.

Is there a date when they will decide

I dont think they'll replace the M4...replacing it with a completely different weapon could cause more problems than benefits...

that's what i thought. Or they coul introduce the new weapon to a completly diffrent conflict in the future

As of now it is said in article in the Book of the AR15(Guns & Ammo),Sabre Defence was recently awarded a contract to produce more than 5,500 M16A4 rifles to support the U.S Navy, Marine Corps and several foregin military customers.  I guess this company is to be watched for the future of the M16/AR15....Sabre is the only third company in the 45 year M16 history besides Colt and FN to be awarded a Contract to supply mil spec M16 to the Gov.

If they replace the M4, then who knows.  If they stay with the M4, it will probably stay with Colt, because although the DoD no longer is required to sole source from them, Colt still owns the TDP, and te DoD will be required to pay Colt royalties if they go anywhere else.  Those royalties will force the price up from any other maker.

My M4 is a Colt but my old M16A2 was an FN.  If it ever happens (unlikely) it will probably be FN.

The gov. has too much money wrapped up in parts/complete weapons in the current M4/M16 series to do a total replacement.

When isn't there?

They're constantly doing this stuff, but it never changes.

In my opinion as a civilian who's never had any real experience with a legit M16/M4, the ONLY time I can see us changing from the M16/M4 family for military use is when we want to use a different round, and then we would have to wait for NATO to also adopt the round for uniformity and availability.

FN has all the tooling to do it.

Except for the barrel, buffer, and upper/M4 feed ramps, it's a M16A2/A4 which they already do.

Oh and that gay my little pony roll mark that's already on my M4 at work.
