Why is 70mph the speed limit on federal interstates?

Was their some kind of .gov test that determined no human being is capable of safey driving over that speed.

Why do cars go faster than 70 mph?

As stated, Utah and Texas, Possibly other western states.
I drove from VA to Vegas and back. Rt.40 out and Rt. 70 back.
Our truck was governed at 75 mph.
It was pissing me off that we couldn't do 80 where it was the legal limit.

A speed sign from the Northern Territory here in Aus..

So the cops need these..

well that was the good old days, they only just put in a 130kp/h speed limit, but i havent been up there for a bit..

[#36]
The speed is fairly arbitrary, based on what the representative legislatures decide to write into the law.

Keep in mind that normal people, businessmen and soccer-moms drive around on the autobahn at speeds of 130mph + every day in Germany.

For high speeds, you do need to maintain the infrastructure well though, for example, keeping debris off of the roadway.
And Germany has stringent driver training standards.

I drove through Montana in 96 during the too-brief period of no daytime speed limit (safe and prudent) for cars.  Have pictures somewhere of my speedometer showing 135mph or so.  Ate gas like crazy but wasn't unsafe and felt great.

IIRC they passed a new speed limit law in '99 because "safe and prudent" was simply too discretionary.  Personally I saw people pulled over for going too fast in mom's (or grandmom's!) Buick, and when I blew past them, they just waved.   I don't think it would be too difficult to come up with some reasonable yet objective guidelines and bring back the "no limit" for cars and drivers that can handle it.

Had nothing to do with "public safety"; there is no proven causal relationship, despite what your gut tells you.  If you are going too fast for your gut, slow down, has nothing to do with me!

And multitasking while driving is somewhat foreign to Autobahn drivers. In America, it's an "always" thing.

IMO, driving while distracted or multitasking is one of the greatest causes of vehcle crashes in this country.

There is a Federal side to it though.  If your Interstate speed limits are 55 mph you get more federal DOT dollars than say 65 mph, and so on.  If the limits are higher, that means the State needs less federal money to maintain there interstates.

Here in IL, it's 55 or 65 nothing higher.

I have to say that Ohio driver SUCK, they are afraid to turn without a light to tell them it is safe, all the speed limits suck. Nothing like a main road with two lanes in each direction and a turning lane who's speed limit is fucking 25, move a little down the road and the conditions are exactly the same but now it is 35, because we are in the next town. The low speed limits here ARE so they can write more tickets. I read something the other day that said Ohio drivers get the most tickets out of the other states. Oh and I've been to places where the conditions were identical, 2 lanes in each direction and a turning lane and the speed limit is 40-50 with similar amount of local businesses

ETA: the freeway limit in Cuyahuga county is 60
