| I don't understand the point of the SS109 deep penetrater. A standard 5.56 will defeat up to a level IIIA vests. The SS109 and standard ball will not defeat a level III vest so I don't get why you would spend the extra money. I have tried the SS109 and found that once the target becomes to hard the penetrater tends to bounce off while the ball ammo will show a pronounced crater. If someone can tell me why it is worth the extra money, I am curious. |

It has a slightly greater maximum effective range due to it's being 62 grains versus 55, and is designed to penetrate a helmet at a given distance, not a Class III vest. Other than that, and being able to get it in battle packs, I don't see much difference. Semper Fi! Ken Little |

Don’t know that there is a dramatic difference between M193 and SS109. However, there is a dramatic difference between a level IIIA and a III vest. To oversimplify things a bit, a IIIA is designed to stop a handgun round, the III is designed to stop a rifle round. Big difference. |
