I came across a model 12 today and was wondering what the value of these are.  I searched on gunbroker, but I honestly couldn't find a similar one to gauge price from.

The gun I saw had an 18" bbl that has been cut.  It is not a factory riot gun, and the metal has a touch of pitting on the receiver.  Wood is in pretty decent shape, and if it weren't for the pitting I'd probably rate the gun at around 78 percent.  They had $395 on it, but like i said, I know  nothing about the Model 12 shotgun.

The pitting is actually not bad, but it is pitting nonetheless.  The wood doesn't have any big nicks or gouges.  The foreend is the larger corncob style, and the stock has a flat plastic buttplate.

Serial #? Year manufactured? Chamber (2 3/4 of 3" heavy duck?)

It should be worth that, though the cut off barrel sucks.

I don't rightly recall the exact number, but I think its 152xx or 152xxx.  Like I said, I don't really remember as I just took a glance on the receiver and mag tube to see if they matched up.  It is just a 2.75" gun, not a 3" heavy duck.

Measure the bbl. properly, if it isn't under 18", I'd offer him $275.

Spray it out w / Gunscrubber, spray in CLP,add 5 rds. of #4 buck and

place next to night stand.

I really don't care about the cutoff barrel, as I would probably do the same if I could find a beater model 12 to hack on.  I like the riot guns, I just don't have the cash to acquire an authentic factory specimen.

I know a cut barrel will almost certainly decrease the value of a shotgun, but I just didn't know by how much and if the $395 was a decent price.  If I could pick up one with an uncut barrel for the same or less, I would rather just go that route.

Yes, I was actually thinking about this earlier.  Before I even considered an offer I wanted to make sure that the barrel was  of  legal length.

Everything in that store was kind of high,  so  I don't know what kind of haggling they will do.  I really don't see them coming down $120, but the worst they can say is no I guess.

I really doubt you'll find a nice example at that price.

Based on your description what he's asking isn't out of line... maybe a bit high for me, considering the barrel and pitting, but I'm cheap, and like what I could buy for that money NIB. See if you can talk him down some, won't hurt. If he'd take $300 then its really not bad at all.

the greatest shotgun ever made but it being cut off and pitting like that, they might be lucky to get $250 for it! [if that]   if the serial number is 152,000 then it was made late teens and the barrel would say "nickel steel", if it is 1,520,000 late 50's /early 60's and barrel would say "winchester proof steel".

I'm almost certain it says winchester proof steel.  Are the nickel steel guns worth more?

I wouldn't pay that. $200 at the most. Model 12 with a hackjob on the barrel? No thanks. I've gotten Model 12s in 20 and 12 Ga. for $130 and $120 respectively in the last 3 years. Pitting is a big no no as well. This guy must be on crack trying to get $400 for that gun. That is too much in like new condition IMHO.

With no disrespect intended....... I'll take 'em all day at those prices, things are

different up here.  I think the M-12 is the greatest repeating shotgun ever made.

Period.

I got two Mod 20's when my dad passed. One was his and the other was my Grandfathers. Dad's was 2 3/4 with imp cyl and the cool thing is, the bluing is worn completely off where he carried it. I can see his "hand print" and how he carried it. Not an ounce of rust on it. Grandpa's is like new, heavy duck  mod with a full choke. Grandpa never really used it.

BTW; They are priceless. (to me)

I sincerly regret selling my M 12s in the mid 90s.

The '56 Heavy Duck solid rib and '49 Trap are the

most painful.....

there really isn't any price or value difference between  "nickel steel" and "winchester proof steel". i myself always felt though that the "nickel steel" is more wear resistant. i have one made in 1927 [nickel steel] that i know I HAVE put 25,000 rounds thru and it's full choke still measures .698 which is industry standard for full choke. i bought it in 1978. i also have a "Trap Grade" from 1942. i'll tell you, nuthin smokes "em like a Model 12!!!

You realize that the Model 12 has a 6-round magazine, right? At least my Model 12 Takedown (cut down to 18.25") does....

That's way too much money for a beater M12. No more than $150, $200 if the original finish is still viable.

Thanks, I edited my post from 5-6, to 5 because it's been a while since I've had

a M-12.  $150 to $200 for a beater 12 is a great deal up here.

Not to offend, but they all take down.

Nope, six in the tube and one in the spout.

I could have sworn that I recalled there being some solid frame M12, but, to quote Roger Clemens, I "misremembered".
