Never before, not since the birth of the PC, have I had as much trouble with an OS as I am having with Windows 10.

I have two laptops running Windows 10.  Both of them are now in a mode where the HDD utilization is 100%.  As you know, this causes normal operation to basically halt.

Task Manager reports the HDD is being used by the SYSTEM.  I am under the impression this started after an auto-update, either W10 or Norton or both.  I could be completely mistaken as to the cause.

I tried to restore to last week's Restore Point (before a W10 "critical update") but it will not go back.

Any ideas on what's wrong?

I have two other machines running W7 which are unaffected by this.

Take off norton garbage. If that doesn't work then click reset or refresh windows.

Win 10 has crashed for me three times in the last week.  I don't have anything on it now as far as anti-virus and it crashed this AM.

In settings, recovery, you can reinstall a mirror of Win 10 from your C drive by performing "reset".  It saves your files but will kill some apps that you will need to reinstall.

I think I have a bad 1T HD or a bad MB and my shit box is still under warranty.

Info/status -

W10 has downloaded and installed 13 major updates in the last 4 days.  This has totally consumed all the available time the laptop has been on, including all day today.

Still, the HDD is just ON! at 100%

With Windows 10?  I have no idea.  I had to do 4 clean installs and call Microsoft 4 times before a tech (who actually knew what he was doing) finally called me back.  With his help I was finally about to get the Creators update to install.  I've used Windows from 3.0 to 7 (excluding ME, 8.0, and 8.1) and never had problems like this.  Even Vista was rock solid in my experience.

Update - both of the machines have gone quiescent again.

They were continuously on for three days and only last night, while I was sleeping, did they settle down.  They must have downloaded and installed the equivalent of a new operating system (several times over).

Whoever did this must could also have the entire contents of my HDD's.  There was a HUGE amount of incoming and outgoing wifi network traffic.  Am I justified in my paranoia over that?

I have never seen anything like this.  Thanks, Microsoft, what a bunch of crap!

Its very possibly you did transfer the equivalent of that many OS's depending on the update delivery optimization settings.  Windows is now going to a bit torrent type update system where local PC's are used to distribute bits of updates to other PC's.  Seems like they want to take the load off Microsoft directly as updates get larger and larger.   It can be turned off to only download and no serve them to other PC's

How big are the hard drives?  Sounds like your problems are just due to not having enough space available for Windows to do its thing.  I wasn't quick to jump on the 10 bandwagon, but since upgrading (over a year now, pretty sure) I've had zero problems with it.

If you upgraded these from Win7 rather than a clean 10 install, there's an option in there somewhere (don't recall where, exactly, but I'll find it if nobody else offers it up) that will let you delete the files necessary to do a rollback to Win7, saving considerable room.  Better yet, download a new Win10 install image, back up your important personal data, and do a fresh 10 install on both machines.  Then put your stuff back.

Search for "disk cleanup" or just run cleanmgr.exe at the prompt.  It has the option to delete the old files and other unneeded files.z

I found more irritations than benefits with 10, and reloaded 7 Premium. I've been a lot happier since.

I wish that I had the option.  However, since I've turn on my W10 machine today I haven't had a BSoD yet.  Even after installing the latest update.  Knock on wood.
