Windows 7 SP1 was finally released today. If you don't want to wait for automatic updates to install it, go here.

I've learned my lessons on being an early adopter.  I'll put off SP1 for a month or so.

It's a heads up as most will have it installed via auto updates over the next few days. It's nice to get a jump and test to see if problems do come up so when end users call, people like me can narrow things down.

Tried to install it through Windows Update but it kept failing. Will try again later when I feel like troubleshooting it.

Does it add any new features or is it just a pack of all the security releases?

My windows 7 is running fine now, I'll hold off on SP1 to hear how it is working for everyone else and so I will have more free time incase it fucks up my system.

BTW does anyone know if it includes any anti-piracy updates?

There are some articles out there which explain all the contents, and which I am too lazy to link to right this minute, but here's the simple version:

99.5% of SP1 is just a collection of all the existing bugfixes, patches, etc. that have already been put out since Win7 was released to manufacturing. The other 0.5% does add a few small items of additional functionality, but nothing particularly noteworthy or impressive.

I installed the stand alone SP1 update today on a new install of 7 Pro x64 - installed pretty quickly & with no issues. Saved having to install a truckload of individual updates...

Anyone else have feedback on this update yet?  Stable or problem child?

Looking for that now.  I like to keep standalone copies of all service packs, just in case I have to reinstall Windows unexpectedly.

I know I could get all the same updates - plus new ones - through Windows Update later, but I hate having to re-download a bunch of stuff.  I'm not on metered Internet or anything, but I prefer to have all the latest security fixes in before I connect a fresh Windows install to the Internet.

It's also nice to have when I'm reinstalling Windows on a machine without Internet access.

update1:
Ouch, it's a whopper.  I guess if you want a standalone installer, you have to get a gigantic 1.9 GB package including a service pack for Windows Server 2008.

Meanwhile, Windows 7's Update is telling me I only need to download about 65 MB to get all the required fixes from SP1.  Of course I've already downloaded about a zillion updates since first installing 7.  Those things add up.

I'm leaning that way too
I've never installed a new OS or a SP when first released

Windows 2008 R2 had its SP1 released too and I'm going to wait a while on that also

I threw it on 5 machines a couple of days ago, and nothing has exploded/imploded.  Quite a hefty download, but I just use the network install.

Nope - only 3 years left. (No fixes for general bugs any more - only security patches. Unless you've paid for the hotfix support...)

DL'ing now.

If it goes FUBAR, it will only take a few hours of Kraken and Coke to fix.
