I have it on my Vista laptop and it seems to work well. My subscription to McAfee Virus Scan expired on my XP desktop so I downloaded the free copy of Defender for XP. I notice when it scans for files it behaves a lot like McAfee.

Should I consider 3rd party virus protection or is Defender a good replacement?

Windows Defender is NOT virus protection, it's for spyware/malware/adware/etc

AVG is a free virus scanner
