I used to have a huge lab at my house running a mix of 2k3 and 2k8 as a platform for a 2k10 exchange environment, but decided to kill it since i have access to lots of Vmware hardware at work to set up/ break down different configs, but wanted to still maintain a small windows network at home.  My question is what is the recovery proccess if a usb drive fails in a home server set up?  it is as simple as replacing the drive with a like size hd or is it a JBOD where the whole array is forever broken?  I am in the proccess of building a second box that will have a hardware raid with a hot spare so this wouldnt be a issue in the future that will run raid 5 for speed and will have a secondarry raid 5 array for local BU ( I know this over kill, but i have lots of data that needs to be preserved).  But in the interm before i build this second box if a usb drive fails can i just remove it and plug in a new one and will home server just rebuild or will the aray be lost if a single drive fails?

The last piece of junk hp home server I used didn't come with two drives, so clearly it was not being backed up.

bought an identical hd and it automatically backed up the original drive

You're talking about extra data drives plugged into your WHS, right?

Are you talking about WHS1 or WHS2?

have you ever heard of a product called Drive Bender?
