I have a Toshiba Satellite L655D-S5050 which I converted to Ubuntu a while ago. I am about to go back to school and need to convert this sucker back to windows. I don't have any of the recovery software handy, so I'll be starting from scratch. I have the Windows 7 key (Home Premium 64 bit) that came with this computer, I just need a recovery disk. The partition is long gone, so that's not an option. Once upon a time I found what I needed on Toshiba's website but I can't seem to find it now.
Can anyone point me in the right direction? I don't care if it is the Toshiba specific version, Windows 7 will suffice. Heck, if I can jump straight to 10 with the key I have, I'll even give that a shot. Thanks. |

Not 100% this will work with an OEM key not a retail. |

If you nuked the window partition on the Ubuntu install, then recover disc is not going to cut it, and you need to do a fresh win 7 install.
If you have a retail key, then here http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_install/windows-7-home-premium-64bit-iso-download/709dcc12-d120-435d-91cd-52e1dd0f4c24?auth=1 If the wins 7 on the machine is Toshiba oem instead (not a retail versioon), then will either need the recover disco with the oem cert that will install on it own, or use the oem version with the OEM SLP key and insert the needed oem cert manually instead. |

This. The key on the sticker will not work to activate a retail version of Windows 7. Google will tell you how to do it. Also, you have to be upgrading from an activated Win7 (or Win8) installation to get Windows 10 for free. |

Small update:
After dealing with a few windows related issues at work, I have decided to give Zorin a try on my home laptop. Windows just doesn't fit my needs as well as I would like. Hopefully Zorin will be close enough to let me do what I need to. I'll keep you posted. Currently downloading the Zorin 9 ISO. |

if you can get any full install win7 disc regardless of version (say by borrowing it from a friend) you can rip it to an iso, edit the iso, and reburn it as a version independent install dvd
I just had to do that with my ultimate disc to install home premium on someone's compaq that had its hard drive fail. I then used the product key from the sticker on the side of the pc and although I did have to use the automated phone system to activate it (man is that a long process) it activated and said it is genuine so I was then able to install updates normally. Since it's the key from your pc it's legal about halfway down, the section that starts with "What to do if you cannot get recovery media from your manufacturer, refuse to use or purchase it or the Microsoft Software Recovery Website is not working?" http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki/windows_7-update/how-to-what-are-my-options-for-obtaining-windows-7/528163c1-0b2e-4ad2-a26d-7112851d1dc2 |
