Need to know where to get the O/S cheap. Have a friend who can build me a smoking machine. If I have to pay retail for the O/S its more than an H.P. ATHALON 3600 MACHINE. Need someone reputable so I can go Microsoft for updates.

Thanks,

Sal

try an oem purchase.. buy a few bits fof hardware from an on-line store, and you can then usualy  get a legit copy are OEM pricing.

XP Home

XP Pro

XP Home a bit lower in price

An even better deal on XP Pro

I've used both of these companies when buying operating systems and you can save over buying locally.  The OEM version is no different than what you get on an already built computer, it's a licensed version.  No support from Microsoft with computer problems but who really calls Microsoft with a problem?  Updates work fine as these are legal OEM versions, like stated above you may need a piece of hardware but if you are building a system you can't get the hardware cheaper than these two places anyway.

To save yourself money you might just want to go with the XP Home over the Pro if $50-$60 dollars difference will help you out on some hardware as in a 16x dual layer DVD burner.  What benefits is there for the added cost of the XP Pro?   I am running XP Home on 3 machines and XP Pro on 2 machines on my home network and I really don't see the need for the XP Pro.

XP Home vs. XP Pro
