When flying in combat, your wingman is supposed to keep bandits off your tail and shooting you down.
Who keeps the wingman safe? Wouldn't he be shot down first, like some kind of Tail End Charlie? |

Wingmans do get shot down. However, the Thach Weave can be done by single planes too. The Soviets called it the Figure 8.
