We are de-installing an external drive array before sending it back to the leasing company, and we'd like to wipe it before it goes. Has anybody had to do this, and if so, what utility did you use? Thanks, Michael |

Try This It's a little freeware utility called Eraser that I have had on my PC for some time. If you use it to "erase" a file, it will delete the file and overwrite it many times with different data patterns. It's not fast, but I don't think anything that does a thorough job will be. It also has an option to "erase" the empty portion of a drive. I'd delete everything on the drive (normal delete), then tell this program to go to town on the empty disk. Then let it run overnight. |
This has worked well for me also. |
Eraser includes/uses Darik's Boot and Nuke wipe utility. It usually takes several hours to wipe a hard drive depending on the capacity and the level of "destruction" specified. |
Eraser uses Darik's Boot and Nuke. Just get Boot and Nuke. dban.sourceforge.net/ |
| just run several low level formats on the drives. You can get the utility from the drive manufacturers site. It will do a good enough job unless you have something really sensitive on the disk. In that case you dont return the drive and destroy the disk with a strong magnet. |
Common household-type magnets won't destroy any hard-disk data. It takes a very strong magnetic field to do. Best bet, you need to wipe out data and can't locate a freeware/shareware program, obtain a copy of Norton's Utilities, they have a wiping program $50. Well worth it if you have some some sensitve data that you don't want anyone to see. |
