Well, I went to the dentist today for a check-up and routine cleaning of the teeth. Being that I'm 18, turning 19 on the 8th of August, my wisdom teeth, or third molars are coming in and I may have to have them removed. Does anyone know the process of this and what to expect? I go to a very good dentist, and they reccomended me to a very good oral surgeon to have it done. Being so young, they said it would heal better now, that it would if I were to have them out later in life. So, basically, I just want to know what to expect. What am I in for guys? |

Mine were growing horizontally and needed to be cut out, judging by the fact you are going to an oral surgeon yours may be similar. The surgery is nothing, you go to sleep and in about an hour or so you wake up loopy and with a mouth full of gauze. You can't spit with force, so any drainage has to just drain out of your mouth.....if you spit you could dislodge the stiches.... You obviously can't eat anything solid for a little while, can't remember the time frame. Oh yeah, when the Nitrous wears off it might hurt a bit....... ![]() Mine did.....luckily they give you some good painkillers. Mine only hurt the first day and then felt better on day two.....also you drool while you sleep it will ruin at least one pillow. |
You really want to know??? Mine didn't bother me when I was 18, I had them done about a couple of months ago. First question, do you have any of them impacted? Meaning, coming out wrong, or sideway, etc? Are you in pain? If you really want to know IM me. Other wise, you are better off going under with some sweet gas. |

They gave me both nitrous and some I.V. painkiller drip. I'm not sure why I needed so much painkiller, but it was f***ing awesome! I remember fading in and out during the surgury. At one point I opened my eyes to see the dentist hammer/chiseling inside my mouth. "That's gotta hurt," I thought, and then passed out again. Afterwards, they gave me a bunch of Codine. |

Had two removed when I was in the Corps, different times. One came in straight and was fine except when it broke through the skin it could have caused a bactiera problem so out it went. 2nd was a few years later, growing sideways and causing errosion of the jaw bone. One was simple, one was difficult. Not asleep for either one. If you have any problems with your regular molars, ie. cavities, they may want to pull them and let the wisdom teeth take their place. Either way, it's that big of deal under a local. |

Actually, they don't hurt at all. My upper right one is all the way in, and it doesn't hurt. My upper left is coming in and my bottom right feels like it's about ready to start coming in. The reason they referred to an oral surgeon is because my dentist doesn't do extractions, and most stuff like that around here is done by oral surgeons and not dentist, for some reason. Fortunately there is no pain. |

The dentist recommended I have mine taken out a couple years ago, and I did. Check with the surgeon and see if it's necessary to remove them. If it is...and they give you a choice between the gas and general anesthesia..GET THE SHOT. You do NOT want to be awake to hear the crunching and grinding they do. And, if they're impacted...you don't want to smell the burning ![]() 2 of my 4 dry-socketed afterwards. It's a whole new definition of "pain". Couldn't eat, couldn't drink anything too cold or too hot, etc. Just breathing hurt. Check with your dentist and a surgeon to make SURE they need to be taken out. Then and only then, do it. |

I went to an oral surgeon. I too was about 18 or 19 when my dentist recommended that I get my impacted wisdom teeth removed. They made me sign a bunch of papers that said they wouldn't be responsible if I lost all feeling, or use of anything close to my mouth. After assuring me that that almost never happens, they plopped me in a chair. Jammed some rubber wedges into my mouth so I couldn't bite them. Put some sort of nose piece on with hoses connected to what I assume was nitrios oxide, and ran some sort of IV into my arm. Told me to start counting backwards from 10 or if I recall and then….I went out. Woke up to the face of the doctor and three nurses in the room. Apparently, I kept on pushing the one nurse away during the procedure so they brought in two others to hold me down. Groggy and tired, I was driven home. I say the procedure is a piece of cake and the recovery the hardest for about a week. You’ll probably swallow a lot of blood during that time and have nasty breath. You’ll probably experience an occasional pain here and there for a month or two afterwards as you bite on foods that stress your rear molars which now have no support in the back until you full heal. I hope this gives you a more clear picture as to what to expect. |

Got six teeth pulled yesterday. It doesent hurt with my mouth closed enough to distract me. If I talk its kinda sore. It was the craziest thing. I was on the reclining chair, I felt smiley... then I was in my house with lots of gauze in my mouth in my bed. Dont remember getting in the vehicle or going home. The gauze SUCKS! |
|
I had my top two cut out under a general anastitic. A few days after I started to get dry socket, man, talk about wanting to put my head thru a wall to stop the pain. Hot wash cloths helped for a bit but god it hurt. I had a back moler pulled a year ago, I put a moist tea bag on it and didn't have any problems at all. Healed up real nice. The tanic acid in the tea helps to form a clot so you're not as prone to get dry socket. I really feel for ya, hope everything turns out ok. Remember, tea bags. Don't drink thru a straw and don't mess with solid food for a couple of days. |

I saw the X-Ray, mine were coming in almost straight towards their neighboring molars. My dentist said they'd probably need to come out, but no rush. Just get to an oral surgeon if they start to hurt. That was over 20 years ago. They straightened out on their own. I still have all four. |
I think dentists should give more of this type of advice. |

I had three until recently..... Only 1 needed to be removed.... the surgeon said the other 2 wouldn't move anymore and harmless (I'm 26). Regardless, I said, "PUT ME UNDER!" I'm a big pussy when it comes to dentist stuff, so I paid the extra money to not feel a thing. I highly recommend it. I fell asleep, then woke up to nothing but numbness in my mouth. When any pain started up, took some pills and it was gone minutes later. Other than the eating process and having to avoid the big gap in my jaw while chewing food, the overall expereience was unevetful. Best of luck! |

Well you might as well be prepared for the worse. I had all 4 of mine out at the same time when I turned 18 (August of '87). Two of mine were impacted. I was under for only 45 minutes and all went well. Sometime in the middle of the night on the first night the stitches came out on my top left hole. Well, unknown to me it bled pretty good during the night. I woke up in the morning with a HUMONGOUS ball of clotted blood in my mouth! Sick! It made me want to hurl. It was so disgusting I had to hank it out. Big mistake! I started to bleed like a stuck pig. Mom had to make a b-line for the oral surgeon to stitch the hole back up. Everything was fine after that. As the sockets healed I experienced an intense itching in the holes for about a week.

Get all 4 done at once. Takes about a day to recover. It is tons of fun as well, as long as they use the good drugs. They used sodium pentothol sp. on me. I woke up and chased the cute dental assistant around wanting to suck her blood after looking in my mouth with a mirror. |
| Have they erupted? luckily i just had mine out today (i'm 14) make sure you get sedated instead of just numbed. I was sedated(valium) but i I woke up just after the first tooth was removed and had the great feeling of my three remaining teeth cut out; my gums were also numbed so it was just uncomfortable. there is a small amount of swelling but ice helps. make sure you get the pain pills before the precedure because when the novacaine wears off it hurts like hell. with the pain pills only the incision hurts. its probably best to get them removed before they erupt, its much easier. good luck |

I think that the bigger you are the more likely they are to knock you out. I had mine right when I turned 17, 6'3" (I've shrunk damnit!), football, wrestling, hockey, and a hard labor summer job there is no way they wanted me even think about waking up until they were done. I said 99 and the next thing I knew I had 4 teeth inside a paper pouch in my hand. If you get them taken out, change the gauze they give you often. More often then you think you need too. Soft serve ice cream for dinner! |
| Had both bottoms out in the Air Force - didn't knock me out because I was training with explosives and had a final coming up. As I recall, they took them out through the ears, at least that's what it felt like for a few days. Did some very creative drooling and looked like a chipmunk for a while. Had the stitches taken out at my home base which was staffed by civilian dentists who said they had never seen such crude work before. Cured any future fear of dentists, didn't figure anyone could top that experience! |
