Those liquor prices are wild. $40 for southern comfort? $20+ for others. That was a LOT back then.

Something you have to consider - the distilleries had converted to producing some sort of alcohol for the war effort. They were selling stock they already had and the supply was limited. I read that they were allowed to go back to whiskey production for one month only in August 1944. The supposed five year supply they had on hand before they converted to industrial alcohol production was drunk up!
