The FN GPMG.. commonly known as the 'Jimpee'. I can't think of a better light role Infantry support wpn than this. Pissed all over the M60, and is still used around the world in huge numbers, particulary with the British Army who put them to good work most days in Afganistan in both the light and SF role.
The only wpn I can think of that comes close would be the German MG42 from WW2. |

The MG3 is still in service today with Germany and many other countries, so I would probably say the MG42 design is the single most important GPMG ever produced. |

As much as I love the MAG58 or M240B the PKM is better.

I'd like to see that guy unmount that and carry it in the Infantry mode.. |

M2................end of thread.............JMB wins every time!!! Until someone gets the headspace wrong, a case blows, and you end up getting discharged from the military because the explosion cut into your femoral artery and you barely survived. There was a thread here with pics not too long ago. Thanks, I'll take something that's a bit more idiot proof. |

M-73/'219 BAR none!!! It's a "Machine gun" AND a useful....boat anchor...blunt object...can SOMETIMES be used to fire belted ammunition AND...manages to look like a toaster with bar attached to it at the same time!!! 'only MG even CLOSE would be an M-85. From what I read/ heard of the M-73/ M-219 boat anchor sounds about right. |

That sounds familar If it were up to me, I'd get rid of the M2. It needs a modern replacement, preferrably something with fixed headspace, aquick change barrel, and a lot less parts. Cut about 30 pounds off that bastard too. |

That sounds familar Is it really so hard to build one that doesn't require close inspection with gauges to make sure it won't harm the operator? Don't the Russians have a heavy MG that's even more rugged and reliable AND shoots a heavier cartridge? |

I too love the M-2HB. It is however outdated and not very accommodating to soldiers who have not trained a lot with it (soldier proof). I've seen too many avoidable accidents in my time. It should be geared towards the lowest common denominator.
Good weapon, needs updated. |

Every XM218(aircrew version of the M2) I ever fired was checked for headspace and timing by myself or my fully qualifed Aerial gunner crewmate. Checking Headspace and timing is not rocket science and takes all of 30 seconds |

Probably the biggest short coming IMO was the restricted access to weapon itself once mounted in the M-60 cupola. |

Checking Headspace and timing is not rocket science and takes all of 30 seconds I was trying to be as non-specific to the duty as possible. It ain't supposed to be "gunsmithing". The guy who assembles the weapon. Puts in the barrel. Evidently the guy mentioned in the thread who was nearly killed didn't have your crewmates with him that day on the firing line. The MG was FUBAR. You'd think there'd be a way to design around such issues, given the decades designers have had to think about it. |

FN M3M We got to do part of the eval. and go thru the technician class as part of a tactics course. 10,000 round barrels, great mount system, easy to run, and great 1st round accuracy. The only draw back was it was on the armorer to do most of the dissasmbly reassembly. |

The MG42/59 (or MG3) is the finest GPMG that has ever been built I'm in no way qualified to speak to the qualitative differences among machine guns, but from a woman's perspective I can tell you the MG42 is simply raw sex. I won't tell you what I'd be willing to do to have one, only that it wouldn't be anything you'd want children or decent women to see. Jane |

MG-42= Stamped steel sex appeal. |

In terms of weight, reliability, ROF, accuracy, barrel switching, etc. It is an awesome machine. ^ this, "Hitler's zipper" is a pure killing machine. With the FN MAG58 (a.k.a. the M240G) as second. Best heavy machine gun is the M2 Browning. |

The guy who "puts the barrel in" is the operator of the weapon system. I am not trying to play down the injury or the situation you are refering to I am simply stating that blaming a weapon system for a human failing is a bad call. The M2 and its variants are exceptionally easy to maintain, reassemble, and disassemble. additionally can anyone link to the thread Jelly is refering to? |

Don't downplay the M60 man....I'm a little partial to it because I was an M60 Gunner but I was impressed with this:
