| my sons console works for a few minutes then shuts down and a red ring appears around the power button .I have Heard of this but wanted to know if there is a fix ? |

if you have a game store around you they usually can fix them cheaper and faster than microsoft if your warrenty is out.
if the warrenty is still good then send it in for free. or as stated above if you have the extended warrenty from best buy/walmart/ect then take it back there for a swap best option is to toss it in the garbage and get a ps3 though. i have gone thru 3 xboxs and now i dont even bother turning it anymore. ETA- i have had a ps3 die also but only 1 to the 3 xboxs. still on the orginal wii lol |

Quoted: Quoted: Take it back to Best Buy and exchange it because you bought the cheap extended warrantee. I've had three for the price of one. um well didnt buy it. it is 3 years old so their warranty would problably be finished right Sorry for being sanctimonious. BB is a popular beat-up around here. I've had nothing but good business with them for reasons just like this. |

But the Xbox was purchased before the PSP but yeah lesson learned |

I found a fix online that ended up costing me about $5 total. Bought all the parts at napa except for the thermal compound.
In a nutshell take it apart, there is another box inside that holds everythign in it. It has these little screws that are like built on it to hold the heatsinks and all down. You drill out the holes, put thermal compound on the cpu, then put your new screws in with washers as spacers...voila..... This might have been the tutorial i used I can't remember if not it's the same thing http://www.instructables.com/id/Fix-the-Red-Ring-of-Deathwithout-towels/step10/Afterthoughts-and-Shoutouts/ |

They fixed my son's lickety split, despite it being out of warranty. No charge to me, even for shipping. nice i sent microsoft an Email and will wait for their response You will do better to call the service line and speak to a CS. They are quite good(we sent back 2 units, same issue) and they get you done and off the phone quick. Sent it in, within a few days, the Xbox came back and ready for play! Good luck! |

Best choice is call microsoft. especially if you bought the console less than 3 years ago the fix is free under warranty. the DIY solution you basically wrap the console in a towl and let it run to re-melt the solder that got messed up. Towel trick is even more of a bandaid fix than the changing out the x-clamp. So far with the X-clamp i've fixed 3 consoles. Worst case scenario I have to re-tighten my screws every 2-6 months. |

Quoted: #1 How many of the 4 lights are blinking red? If its 3, THATS the red ring of death....AKA hardware failure If its all 4, this is NOT a hardware failure, there is a connection lose...and off the top of my head, i can't remember exactly which one... All 4 lights is an A/V cable connection failure. The box thinks that the A/V cable isn't attached. |

I had one of the original release day 360's. It worked fine for 2 years then the red ring of death happened. I sent it in (it was in pristine condition without a scratch) and they sent me one back that looked like a kid played soccer with it... it's in less pristine shape aestetically speaking... and I lost all of my save game profiles.
Make sure you save those before you ship it off. |

Since i've fixed mine i've had to re-tighten it once so far it's been about 5 months since i did it and i just re-tightened. I don't think I would ever try the towel thing. Just seems to me that it would screw up more than it fixed. |

In Before PS3's Don't Break Down. My brother is on his 3rd one. I was out of warranty when I sent my Xbox in. Didn't charge me a penny. All electronics eventually fail. Sony just knows how to make a system that prolongs that inevitable failure Oh ya, I got to upgrade my HDD from 40 to 250gb, for about 60 dollars, and a still valid warranty. |
