I've watched a few of their live performances of this song and I think it's just amazing. I don't know how they can pull that off. I've been a Rush fan since I was a kid in the late 70s. They've been my favorite band ever since the release of Moving Pictures. I've played YYZ in various bands over the years since the 80s. It's certainly difficult for non-musicians (casual players), but for accomplished musicians it is not. Rush is fairly difficult for drummers if you're playing much of it. But far from impossible. I used to have a 3-peice band with my brother (me on lead guitar, him on drums) and we did the entire A-side of Moving Pictures and some other Rush tunes. We had people who'd come to watch us play just for that. But again... I've worked with a lot of musicians over the years who couple play Rush well. Want to step it up in terms of difficulty to play? That would be Dream Theater, Angra, etc. Or better yet, go with jazz fusion or classical. At any rate, not pissing all over the boys from Rush. I've seen them live several times and will always love them. But it's not as hard as many people think (if you've got decent skills). Alex is definitely the weakest link the the chain in terms of raw technique (he's gotten quite sloppy in his old age). But every one of them brings something important to the table and none could be replaced. Who'd even WANT any of them to be replaced? They are iconic. |
