I do, all kinds of advertisement, this that and the other. Before you know it there will be pop ups.

Do you have any idea how much it costs to run this site?

Gotta pay for all the bandwidth the 100,000 members use somehow.

Commercialized?  No, that is a necessary integral part of all this, I worry about its objectivity in certain forums.

As long as the advertisements have to do with guns,I don't really care.Gotta pay for the bandwith some way..If the Avila's profit off of it,more power to them.

Why am I not surprised that this is coming from a NON-PAYING MEMBER!?

Pony up for a membership or STFU about how the site is operated.

Do you have any idea what it costs to run a website of this magnitude?  Yet, you use the site... FOR FREE... and bitch about the advertisements.

+1

I think its actually better in some ways that there are a lot of gun vendors advertising on this site. You can get direct feedback to/from certain vendors right here on the forum (CProducts is a great example). As arfcommers we get deals that the general public doesn't get at times too.

I don't have any gripe in the whole advertising fight. Avila's can put whatever damn thing they want up.

But if you think that your $24 a year comes even close to paying for the bandwidth that you use, you've lost your mind.

The advertisements pay for everyone's use of the site.

I hope they are making a lot of money. The advertisements are handy go-to buttons to buy or just research products.

There are at least six banner ads that I buy parts & stuff regularly.

So there are some advertisements on the top of the pages. Whoopdedoo. I've done business with some of them before they even advertised here and some because they advertised here. It's pretty inoncuous, you can read them or not as you wish. I would hope the Avilias make money or at the least break even because ths site is a wealth of information and to stay in operation takes money. It is far better then a few firearm places on the web that still hit me up for cash even tho I have not been on them for 4 or 5 years and were only there a few months.

A few advertisements and a few bucks is well worth it here.

All of the ads are firearm related.  Try clicking on a few, there are some good dealers up there at the top of the page.

I just want to say that I like the ads.  I like to support companies that support ARFCOM.  OTOH, I hate ads on other sites.  If you are using Firefox you should install the plugin Adblock.  I installed it last night and I really like it so far.  You just have to teach it some and the ads are removed.  You can also whitelist a page or a site if you don't want those ads removed. (I have ARFCOM whitelisted. )

Actually - I DO know what bandwidth costs and I'm roughly guessing that my membership goes a long way to pay for my usage - and probably a small fraction of yours.

Its not as if the cost of YOUR bandwidth usage is keeping you awake at night.

Neither is the cost of anyone else's, for that matter.

Point is, this site is free for anyone to use. The Avila's want it that way. We get some extra perks when we pay. One of those perks is certainly not being allowed to treat the vast majority of the board as a group of second class citizens.

If that's the way it worked, the advertisers would be perfectly free to shit on both the 'freeloaders' and the 'cheapskates.'

I don't see anyone crapping on members.  What is see (and have noticed an odd increase in) in the number of posts by non-paying members complaining about how slow the site is - or in this case, a non-paying member complaining about the fairly unobtrusive ads by PAYING ARFCOM advertisers.

If there are threads where paying members started it complaining about "members" that do not contribute to the site financially - then I will agree that is wrong.  Just as wrong as non-paying members starting threads complaining about paying ARFCOM advertisers.

Don't pay to use ARFCOM.  I don't care.  Just hold your complaints about bandwidth issues or paying advertisers.

On the whole, no.

IMO, there ARE far too many dealers in the EE though. It's impossible to browse through the EE without looking at 10 pages of dealer ads for stuff that almost every dealer sells like Vltor stocks and Phantom flash hiders.

Oh, I get it.

And as I said. I have no dog in the fight.

You'll never see me start a thread bitching about ads. And rarely will I even bother to respond in one bitching about how slow the site is, save for the very, very occasional +1.

I get far more than I pay for out of this site, and have no room to complain about such things.

But even in the past as a paying member, I never touted that my money was somehow  helping pay my way better than someone who doesn't pay at all. I never busted out the term 'freeloader' that certain paying members like to use. It wasn't something I felt necessary to hold over anyone's head, like they weren't doing their part.

It's ridiculous. We all use this site for free. Some can afford, and choose, to contribute money. Some do not.
