For all the KAC people, why not get an LMT enhanced bolt? Their current version hasn’t failed ever, from my limited research.
If the bolt is the part in question. If it does, it’s replaceable with any bolt. I’ve had a couple of KAC and they were finicky with slightly lower power ammo. Now before you all tell me about low octane in a Ferrari, this thread is about the fantasy end of the world. Get whatever ammo you can and all. To the thread. I’d choose my Colt / M16. |

If I get a failure I'm more likely to swap the entire weapon (instantly) than a part/assembly. Sitting around swapping parts is a REMF thing. 
(Yeah I could have spare parts in a ruck/vehicle but in that case I'm going back and recovering the inoperable weapon later. No point carrying useless weight in an emergency.) Ideally I'd be part of a large team patrolling around in armored convoys. That'd be a growth goal to work towards anyway. (Eventually QRF & CAS also). As it stands now, at least I have access to a MRAP and lots of small arms.

If most people are dead (ish) and there's way more batteries than people in all the stores, that equals plenty of batteries still left in all the stores.
By the time the shelf life has expired on the lithium batteries, my team would have our own battery manufacturing plant back in operation. AA has the highest availability, so I'd favor AA accessories in long-term SHTF. That means Aimpoint CompM4, old-school PVS-14 with dual AA, ancient PEQ-2, and some kinda weapon light with AA (mine all use CR123 currently). I don't think a pistol light exists which runs on AA, so I'd be stuck with lithium 123's there. Still, I'd rather roll with one oddball than switch to 123's for everything. SOCOM uses 123 because they're better, smaller, and lighter, but they also get resupplied very quickly. |

Colt LE6920. As close as I can get to my issue M4A1.
Couldn't care less about those boutique ARs - regardless of whether or not they would be free. I am sure there are objectively better ARs out there, but they don't have the track record out there that the actual M4 has. |

I'd be very surprised if, with 90+ % of the general population dead, that the survivors would be able to make anything as relatively simple as a mass produced modern pencil. |

Maybe not reliable, but we'd literally have access to everything we could secure. New production workflows could be put into place. Resources could be found/obtained. I don't think you give people enough credit, or perhaps just underestimate the resourcefulness of dedicated survivors. All it takes is motivated individuals acting as a team, with proper leadership. Then you secure whatever resources are required to accomplish the objective. |
| If we're talking about a zombie apocalypse my selection would be none of the above. Not saying I wouldn't grab something just because I wanted it but it never made sense to me that people in zombie movies would attack weak, slow, moronic targets with loud weapons. Zombies are only dangerous because there are a lot of them and they overwhelm the normal people. Firing a gun would just draw the attention of others and call zombie reinforcements to attack you. So my survival selection is probably a Louisville slugger or whatever had a silencer attached or was predrilled to fit one. |
