A concept in management theory in which the selection of a candidate for a position is based on the candidate's performance in his or her current role rather than on abilities relevant to the intended role. Thus, employees only stop being promoted once they can no longer perform effectively, and "managers rise to the level of their incompetence." But then, I pretty much get left alone to get things done, so it's all good. |

Good guy. Inherited tiny company while in college and finished his engineering degree. That was 45 years ago. No layoffs in that time period and we are in an industry that does it quite often. He also pays a bonus each year that starts at 20% gross pay. My dad retired from there about 10 years ago and I work there now, only about 10 of us in the office. Prior to that I worked with/for my dad who had the best job in the world. Not only did he get to work for the company/boss mentioned above he got to run his own company on the side. |

Old boss was awesome.... Went to bat for the team, smart, level headed, knew what was going on both above and below her and would push back where it made sense to keep the team from getting overloaded. Best part was you could go vent and know it stayed right there and also didn't reflect badly on you in reviews. She was so good she got promoted quickly and eventually move on to bigger things outside the company.
New boss is ..... Well, IMo, is in way over her head. Been teaching her the proper way to do stuff and what not to do since day 1. Doesn't have the experience or the filter for anyone to feel comfortable discussing dislike about almost anything. She's been treading water in the deep end a lot lately. |

Idiot.
Running company into the ground. Regularly throws employees under the bus to cover his own incompetence. 8 months till my contract is up, and I am fucking gone. I own the property his building is on and will be selling it to any one but him after I leave. |
| My boss is like an abusive spouse. He yelled at a coworker yesterday for a completely unnecessary reason (the coworker expressed a different opinion), and then asshole boss apologized for yelling to him today, and then told the coworker that it was his fault he got yelled at. |

My boss is a cunt literally. She micro manages me, but yet has no idea what I do. Second guesses me on most decisions and rides my ass so hard that it makes me make mistakes. I cannot wait to get out of this hellhole. Its so bad I have a hard time sleeping Sunday nights because I know come morning another week will have to be tolerated. Someday, I will get a much better job. Right now resumes just fall into a black hole never to be heard from again. |

Over all my boss is good! He mostly macro manages, it is after all his business! When he starts to micro manage(rare as it is), I just remind him of what he is doing, and he realizes it and backs off!
Mind you I run his shop and he is an absent owner(he has a completely unrelated business that he runs). Then again we have been friends for close to 18yrs and have worked together for 15 of them. As long as shit is getting done, I have free range.....within reason. |

Great boss. Retired AF Col./combat pilot, expects/engenders loyalty from his staff and is very loyal in return. He has our backs, we have his, and it works very well.
He was my immediate supervisor back when my son/first child was born very premature, and I cannot imagine having a more understanding and supportive boss. We have spent some time apart since, in different bureaus, but fate and bureaucracy brought us back together a few years back and I couldn't be happier about that. |

Boss is an idiot.
Firmly entrenched in "diversity" aka discrimination. Will shit all over the tier below him everytime, whether it's floor employee complaints, dept complaints, city council complaints, the problem is always the Team Leaders, not him, not that we're understaffed, not that the depts employees are abusing equipment, not that we retain incompetent employees, not the fact that the Team Leaders have no tools to get anyone to do anything, can't punish, can't reward. He doesn't seem to comprhend that the days of a man coming to work and putting out to the best of his ability for his own moral/ethical reasons are long in the past. My boss has been pretty good for 22 years. Sometimes he'll drive you fucking nuts with some of his OC bullshit and his (auto and towing)shop scheduling, but for the most part he's pretty easy to work for.
He is really hard to be the new guy for though..... If you don't quit or get fired in the first 3 months, you're in good.

I'm starting to be convinced my boss is a parrot that just reads off what the company expects, and could give a rip less about anyone's concerns. I wish I had another of the 3 bosses, who is nice and answers my questions and seems really cool.
One of the reasons I'm trying to get out of my current job. All the bosses I had when I worked at 1-800flowers.com were pretty much awesome. Especially one named Jean. Jean was really awesome and fair. My latest boss, Karen was pretty cool as well. |
