So random topic of the day, as it's Friday for me at work and I'm already bored.
When was the first time you fired an AR? Mine was Around June of 2002 as an 21 year old NG Infantry Basic Trainee at Fort Benning trying to pay my way thorugh seven years of college. The Good 'ole M16A2. I had only shot a shotgun prior to it in high school, so I was pretty much in heaven. |

Actually think we shot the M249 and M240B before we started dealing with the M16. Not gonna lie.....I really really enjoyed basic training. It was very fun. |

Actually, it was when I built my match rifle, in 2007 or so. My dad is a very "guns have wood stocks" guy, so I had grown up shooting matches with his Garand and M1A, then my Garand, but had only ever shot an AR180. Now, I own more ARs than my other rifles put together...

Early 80's
Wasn't a AR but a M16 that Colt gave to gun author R.L.Wilson because they liked some Colt stuff he wrote. Backyard picnic in CT of all places. The backyard had a good backstop but there were plenty of close neighbors. Surprised the cops never got called. I don't expect Colt ever gave away many M16s.This was a 20",likely a A2. Got to rip off a 20rd mag. Also shot a presentation grade single action army the same day. Somebody asked Wilson how much the SAA was worth and he said "About $20K now because of the grade and the fact that it is unfired and factory engraved by so and so" then he proceded to fire it and with a grin said "$10K now". Same day I got to rip off a stick mag (30rd?) in a beautiful pre war commercial Thompson. To be honest the Thompson was so awesome that the M16 and the SAA were not getting much attention This was before Mr Wilson went to prison for being a thieving lying weasel for getting kickbacks for putting false values on collectable guns and not paying taxes on those kickbacks. Never cheat the taxman! I believe at the time I owned a Ruger Blackhawk and a 10/22 but didn't shoot much and didn't know much about guns. I didn't know who R.L.Wilson was and just thought he was a Bullshitter about the value of his guns |

I was one of the few. I think partly because I was guard and new I was going back to college when it was done. For me though, I viewed the Drill SGTs as high school football coaches. I played Rugby in college, and football wrestling and baseball in HS, so the physical and mental aspect for me was a piece of cake. Three square meals a day, awesome weapons, a grenade... the only thing I hated was the CS chamber. That left a permanent scar and an appreciation for my promask. |
| Back in 1997. I was doing in internship with the GBI and I went to the range with some of the guys I was riding with that day. Some of the tactical guys were there and they let me and the other intern fire off a few 3 round bursts. Wanted one for years. Finally got my 1st AR last year. But, can't afford all the BS for full auto, but getting a slidefire this year. Not quite the real thing, but not bad. |

1988 July or August USAF basic training. I couldn't see too well because my glasses kept fogging up and I had problems proning and kneeling because of the damage I suffered on the confidence course the previous day. I qualified because I had fired a 10/22 for a few years before that day.
I don't know what it was I was firing and don't really care because I wasn't into guns at the time. I fired MY first AR-15 over 10 years later when I put my Mega gator lower with the RRA upper I purchased. |

The first time I fired an AR was is 2009. It was my grad present to myself.
When I first shot it I was function testing before assembly, so it only had a buffer tube, barrel, lo pro gas block and gas tube.
I've learned everything I know about ar's from this site. |

My first time was this past Thanksgiving day. I had been talking about getting one and visited the girlfriends parents farm for dinner and her brother-in-law brought his Bushmaster with him. After squeezing off a few rounds I knew I was making the correct decision. My first gun I own now is a Sun Devil Mfg with all Magpul parts. I just picked it up the other day and haven't had time to go out and pop a few off. I am hoping I have time this weekend. |
| Mine was an M16A1, before there were A2's, carbines, M4's etc. Had not even seen an AR15 except in gun magazine ads prior. Did 24 years with the M16 as my primary duty weapon. Short 18 months assigned to Canadian unit (NATO) with sterling smg. I hated my M16A1 or A2. I was always issued a rack gun that had been abused or serviced by a crap armourer. I always was a shooter and guns were my hobbie. Those duty guns left a sour taste in my mouth. I never got to shoot enough to get comfortable with one. Had NO desire to ever own an AR. Then one day a deal on an M4 A2 copy with 14.5 fell into my hands. I thought "I'll buy this and sell for a profit". I owned M14's, AKM's, FAL, etc. Decided to shoot some with it ............and now 6-7,000 rounds later without malfunction and only replaceing gas rings it's a go-to gun. It's a 100% better platform than those M16's could have ever thought to have been. I even built one last November that has 1,600 trouble free rounds thru it. Did that one all milspec with flat top. Mounted a micro red dot and an MI buis to co-witness front sight. Maybe had I purchased an AR15 early on I wouldn't have hated and badmouthed the black guns so much. So.....my first AR15 experience was 2005, over 30 years since I fired my first M16........Mike |

It felt so different from the M16s at basic. Magical almost. really love the M4. Then I commisioned, switched from the guard to the Reserve and deployed with an M16. Didn't even get the option to have a sidearm instead. I carried that miserable musket my entire deployment. I love the M4, but am not as a big a fan of the M16. |
When I was 12 or 13- my first gun which was a ban era olympic arms a2. I was in my room watching tv when dad came upstairs with two ARs. Up to this point, I knew my dad had guns but I've never been shooting with him. I think he just arbitrarily decided I was ready to shoot. Anyway, he told me that the Olympic was mine. I was really excited bc it looked cool- an actual Black rifle and it was mine. I was also glad I didn't get the other AR he had because it looked old with its faded finish and weird triangular hand guards. Of course now I know better because his was an early 70s colt sp1 . He's since sold both rifles but if I'm ever able to, I'd like to buy him another sp1 one day. I'm sure he'd be as excited as I was back then

I bought a Bushmaster A2 HBAR (neutered post-ban) in 2002, right around my 19th birthday.
I'd never fired an AR before, or really spent much time handling them. I just decided I needed one. It was a good rifle and is responsible for tossing me head first into this AR game. I've since sold it though. I should've just slapped an A2 Gov't barrel on it and kept it in hindsight.... |
| First time I ever fired one was back in 2002 using my Dad's Colt HBAR that he bought at a gun show. I believe it was made during the 1994-2004 AWB because it lacks the bayonet lug and has that funny sear block thing that I heard Colt put in their commercial rifles. My personal Colt AR of course doesn't have any of that garbage and I much prefer the M4 style anyway. It wasn't until I purchased the first AR I had where I really fell in love with the platform. |
