Anyone know anything about them? I have been trying to think of low cost ways to have a livable place and came across Yurts! They look awesome and would be all I need. I live in the rainiest spot in N America and was wondering how it would hold up to winds and rain. If they are what they say they are you could really live off the grid for the most part in one of these! That and your cost for housing would be almost nil. I would love to hear from someone who has experience with one! Thanks

Here is a link to one company I was looking at

Yurts

So let me get this straight...

You wanna' live in a tent. Out in the boonies, off the grid. In Alaska.

ETA I mean, it's friggin Alaska!

only things I'd heard about them were

1) Mongol herdsmen live in them
2) They're made out of wool felt.

706 square feet costs you almost 10 grand, and you still need to finish the inside (electrical, plumbing, yada yada). For that price, if I were looking to live as cheaply as possible, I'd just get a used mobile home.

for 10grand you can build a Really nice cabin, and it would be finished and much warmer than a tent.  I actually think the yurts are cool but all the hippy's love em so I could never do it.  That and they are priced to high.

Yea, my dad toured the pacific yurt factory. We thought about them for awhile, but
(A) I am highly skeptical of the durability of the whole thing (IMO A grizzly could destroy it in a few minutes)
(B) They are freaking expensive for what you get!

I am now getting a travel trailer instead.

The state or Oregon has used them for a while in state campgrounds... havent had a chance to use one yet but Its on my to do list. The use Pacific Yurts. Maby tour a camping forum and find someone who has used one for comparison.

I've never heard of it, but it does have a hippy sound to it. I wouldn't want to live in one of those things unless I was on some tropical beach that didn't get any hurricanes.

I read that the Mongolian type felt covered tents are properly called gers. The English word yurt comes from the Russian word yurta which is derived from a Turkic word describing a camping ground. Whatever they're called, they do look interesting.
