When you are traveling during zombie occupation, will you wear ear protection at all times in case you gotta engage some zombies? Prolonged firefights with the undead will wreck havoc on your ears. What do you do?

battle field pickup 9mm casing, each ear.

This is one thing 9mm is better for.  At least for my ears.

ETA:  YMMV.

With ear plugs in, you would never be able to hear those zombies right behind you...

My peltors amplify sounds and protect from sudden loud noises and frequencies, i.e. gunfire. I hear better when I need to, and protect it when I need to. Also, with 4 AAAs they have a 200 hour battery life.

I would run one in my right ear to stop the noise a bit.

I own 8 pairs of eye protection / sunglasses. All are Oakley. i also own about 10 pairs of the Surefire / Earpro Sonic defenders. These are by far the best most comfortable plugs i have ever worn. not uncommon to forget to take them out because they are comfy and let most sounds in. I keep 2 sets of each in each vehicles grab bag and the rest are laying around where I may need them.

This seems good and maybe surefire ear pros. Even those get uncomfortable after 5+ hrs

If my base's location requires me traveling 10 hours on foot to get supplies, I think I need a new base.

If I was just sitting in a secure position snipping I would use ear protection but if I was doing anything where my hearing was critical I wouldn't wear anything that suppresses my hearing because even with my ears ringing I'd hear better than with ear plugs in and I wouldn't be worrying about my hearing twenty years from then. I wouldn't use anything electronic so I wouldn't waste the batteries that could wind up being critical else where. Even if the batteries only fit in the ear protection at some point when necessary they could be strung together with other batteries to use a radio or some other much more needed item.

The other day I came home and the kitchen sink was full of red ants.  I turned on the water and killed all but a few (so they could tell the others what they saw).

I didn't stop to ask which ants were well prepared or better trained.  A mass casulty event will be much the same.
