I am spending a few days this week at a hotel on the riverwalk on west Market street. Can anyone recommend some restaurants and things to see within walking distance? Thanks, Bob |
I was completely shitfaced when I was there last, otherwise I'd help... That being said, have a good time, the River Walk is a lot of fun. |
| walk a few blocks to market square. Mi Tierra and Los Margaritas are first rate. Owned by the same family. I spelled the second one wrong but the fajitas are great. BTW they are a bunch cheaper than the river walk. I am in New Braunfels if you need any help. John |

Take your wife, leave the kids at home. Now this is GREAT fun... before you leave google for the Alamo cam. Bookmark it. Then while you and your wife are standing in front of the Alamo, call home on your cell phone, tell your kids to click that bookmark, and wave at them. Show them how much fun you and your wife can have leaving their little butts at home... hah! OK, mine were all teenagers at the time, incl the older daughter that was 20 and in college. They had neighbors keeping track of them, too... not like we really abandoned them. Hah!!! Alamo Cam is at www.mysanantonio.com www.mysanantonio.com/multimedia/webcams/ "Mom, is that you in the pink shirt, and Dad in the flowery hawaiian shirt?" ---- It's La Margarita's... and that is called by the locals, The Mexican Market (Market Square). Great live music, and even better... GREAT fajitas. Get the shrimp/chicken/beef fajita platter. You can split that 3 or 4 ways and all have plenty. If with your wife, or even family, do go to the Tower Restaurant at the Tower of the Americas. That is the huge space needle looking thing visible all over that area. Do not drive. Tell your concierge or desk clerk you want a reservation and want to be picked up by the shuttle van. The van is free, but tip the driver. I'd tip him $10. He'll take you back to the hotel, too. A great meal there will cost you $40-$50 for the two of you. Not at all out of line for a ritzy joint. Also, get your reservation for about 1/2 hr before sunset. Watch the sun go down and the city light up. The restaurant rotates once in about 40-50 minutes. If a jazz fan, go to Jim Cullum's The Landing on the Riverwalk. Ask for a map of that area at your hotel desk. If with wife and kids, do the boat tour in the river. There are a number of ticket kiosks down there, and the wait is not too long. BTW, down on the Riverwalk is about 10*F cooler than street level. Still, this time of year dress light, it can be quite warm. Don't think you have to eat just Tex-Mex there. Lots of great German restaurants, too. Do NOT be afraid to ask just anyone on the street how to go where, etc. They are all proud of their city, and sound like tour guides. San Antonians apparently all consider themselves ambassadors of their city. Great people. No wonder that it is one of the fastest growing cities in TX, or the country. And ask where Joe Posada is playing and go hear him. SERIOUSLY. Joe came REAL close to getting a Grammy this year. www.joeposada.com/ Other good local bands, Corazon' and Los Jazz Vatos. www.losjazzvatos.com |

It is just the wife and I. We ended up at Casa Rio's for dinner. It is different than the Mexican places in Louisville. It was a very good meal for under $30.00 with drinks. We will be over by La Margarita's tomorrow so we will try it out. The riverwalk is a lot of fun!Tomorrow, the Alamo, as she has never been there. I have, but it was 25 years ago. I heard somewhere that there is a movie set of the Alamo not far away that was actually a better experience. Anyone hear of that? Thanks, Bob |
