Damn buddy, of course I wouldn't pepper spray the poor animal. I would have carefully stepped back two paces slowly keeping my eye carefully on the dog the whole time. Then ran forward and using proper form kicked the dog square in the chest throwing my arms up yelling "Field Goal! Three points!". |

I was not there and will not pass judgment one way or the other. With that said it looks to me like the dog was trying to get to "his" kid and was kinda scared from being out. You wrote that the dog circled you heading towards the kid. Personally I would have waited just a half a second more to see if the dog was heading to the kid or if it was heading towards you. It might have picked up on your nervousness and was trying to make sure you did not hurt his kid. Once again I was not there and obviously do not know every detail so I refuse to pass judgment. If you think it was a good spray then it was if you have doubts then just maybe you should have waited. Either way good on you for defending you child when you felt it was threatened. |
Okay. Although if you go up to the house after spraying the dog, that is exactly what you are likely to face. I would not expose my son to a possible explosively upset homeowner so soon after his dog got sprayed. You are completely in the right in your actions to spray the dog. An animal threatened you in a public place, and you defended yourself and your son with a non-lethal California approved method. I would think nothing more of continuing on my way. Next time I went around the block I would just make sure I had a fresh pepper spray for any eventuality. Actually, next time I would be carrying my XD45, but I live in Ohio where such things are finally an option. |

edit. okay now mine makes no sense anymore. And it wasn't just your double post, it was the whole bevis&butthead gestalt of what you said. I honestly thought you did it on purpose for laughs. so I'll repeat, you did the right thing. Protecting your kid is never wrong. |

You're a real hero... a true American Man's man. I'm sure both of the boys watching will look back on this day and remember it fondly. It isn't what I would have done and I sure as hell wouldn't have respected my father had he done the same. I hope if your boy ever looses his puppy in the neighborhood some brave man returns the favor. |

You let it get four feet away from you. That was a mistake, in my book. You pepper sprayed it, as it was a possible threat. BFD. Hooch will get over it. It's not like you were cruel, or mean, or out to get the dog. Kid should be glad you didn't draw CCW and kill the damned thing. I love my animals, but I also don't allow them to run all over the damned place. I'm certainly not going to bear a grudge because someone defended themselves when they felt threatened by my dog. Especially not when all they did is pepper spray it, which is about the least damaging option they might have. |
Meh you probably have government heath insurance so whats a mauling to you. I'd have shot it, but i live out in the bfe and anything stray is shot. We value our stuff more than you valve your animal. |
If I knew the people it would be different but judging by your post; you don't know them. I would call animal control and tell them a dog is running loose in your neighborhood and that it charged you earlier in the evening so you sprayed it. I would also tell them you are scared that you would get bit or your child get bitten. |
There you go. I too live out in the boonies. If a dog that isn't mine gets within 20' of me or mine while displaying an aggressive attitude it risks it's life. |
Exactly what would YOU have done to the dog? Given that 1) it is advancing on you and your small child, and 2) it is barking and growling at you while advancing. Pepper spraying the dog is a completely reasonable response to an animal behaving in that manner. So is capping a few rounds into it. I love dogs myself, but the choice between a dog and a small child is a no-brainer: the dog dies. |
Yep. On my property, if it shows teeth at me and mine, it dies. I refuse to get my ass chewed on for somebody else's tender sensibilities. |

I wouldnt have sprayed him quite that soon but unlike those assholes that shoot dogs, im not mad at you. The dog will recover 100% and get over it. Also thanks for showing that pepper spray does work against an animal so there is no reason to be a nutless pussy and shoot one that gets within 50 feet of you. So no i wouldnt have sprayed in that situation. Yes i would inform the parents if i had sprayed. The only time i would spray is if it was a huge, very aggresive (BITING), no collar, no owner in site dog. And NEVER DEPLOY PEPPER SPAY NEAR A CHILD, unless you want to end up on the evening news if it drifts and hits him in the face. |
yeah, I'd go. and if they are jerks about it, then file a police report about the loose dog that menaced your boy and you. |
Ok, so you wait till it's chewing on you then spray it, and call the media because you got your kid too. Hmmm....Sounds reasonable.

make sure to rub your eyes as well (it makes them feel better)
