I understand ballistically this cartridge is very similar to the 6.5 Swede.

Anybody got one? Thoughts?

Abouyt the same on lighter animals. With modern bullets its even better. With old syle bullets I dont think it was in the same class as a a 6.5 Swede. I wouldn't hesitat to shoot a moose with a 6.5 I would with a 257 even with a modern bullet

It's a great cartridge if you have an old mauser action and want to build a rifle out of it and stay with the original 57mm case length.

It's too long for a short-action rifle if you want to be able to seat bullets long, and doesn't capture all the potential of a true long-action, so wile it's a neat cartridge, I thing it was a product of the tons of surplus mauser actions available once upon a time, and pales in comparison to more modern cartridges.

FWIW, I had one once, and rebarreled it to 25-06, and wouldn't mind having another Roberts barrel for nostalgia, but otherwise don't see the point.

Good luck finding a gunshop that stocks it.

I have a remington classic in 257 bob in a pillar beded fajen laminate stock.

The  caliber comes in to it's own when handloaded. The factory loads are loaded down due to the older rifles out there.

My best load on deer here in texas is noslars in 115 grain weight. Good out to 270 yards( took a nice doe at that range).

90 grain bullets are good all around load for hog, coyote or deer if the range is under 200 yards.

Only one for me, though it is actually marked ".257 Rem" as this round was originally known as the .257 Remington Roberts.

'98 action barreled by W.A. Sukalle of Phoenix, AZ in 1946.

The rest of the work done by myself. With quite a bit more to do.

The picture shows my eclectic taste in shooting iron.

In a modern long action bolt rifle, it is superb if you reload.  All factory ammo is quite mild, even the +P stuff.

I've loaded for my Ruger M77 with 117 Sierra GKs to get 2950 ft/second out of its 22" barrel.  Sub MOA  accuracy too.

There is a pretty good selection of .257 caliber bullets these last few years, so the 257 Roberts is a very good tool for hunting, but I'd give longer range advantage to most 6.5 or 7mm choices.

I run a bit more velocity with my 25-284, 3300+ fps with 100 grain bullets(Pretty much a 25-06 twin in a short action), but a good hunting partner has done plenty of good with his .257 Roberts.

Thank you.

Currently working on the finish of the stock and learning to checker so I can do that part.

Materials on hand to rust blue the metal, so more learning.

The first rifle of this type of I have built.  It has been fun.

My sister has had some neck and shoulder issues and is a bit recoil sensitive. Dad set her up with a.257 to hunt with and it serves her well. The last elk we got she took with that rifle and dropped him like a stone.
The other side of that is that she can shoot. Bullet placement rules.
