Is it worth having?

I wouldn't.

But if you do, I'd make sure you reload for it also.

It isn't a bad round really but ammo is pretty hard to find around my area.  Other than the agencies that were practically given the pistols it really hasn't gotten much traction.  I expect it will be all but dead by the end of the decade if it not sooner.
8/1/2013 10:59:10 AM EDT
[#6]
why?

just man up and get a real .45   (ACP)
8/1/2013 10:59:58 AM EDT
[#7]
All I can say is FPNI.

[#8]
Ammo cost sucks for the pistol when you can find it.  My mom uses my G37 because she likes the pistol.

Benefits of the G37 that should have been carried over to other Glocks was the rounded muzzle end of the slide why will Glock not do this to all the pistols other than subs.
8/1/2013 11:01:59 AM EDT
[#9]
The only advantage is that you're one of a very few in the pool looking for that ammo.

Problem is that the ammo manufacturers know that too.  In a few years, it'll be like trying to feed a .25-20, an expensive pain in the ass.  You might get in on a few big wins on clearance sales though.

Market forces aside, it's not a terrible cartridge.  Those market forces are just a very powerful downside.

not to hijack, but I will.

dead cartridges are "dead" just like oddballs can be problematic.
I was in a local gunstore last week and a man was in there having a low level meltdown because he was scheduled to go on a prairie dog hunt out of state this month, but the largest shop in Tulsa didn't have any bullets he needed in stock or loaded ammo for his dog gun. ( .204 ruger).

.223/.22-50 and other varmit style ammo and components were everywhere.

this ammuntion supply and demand has really opened by eyes to what will be stocked longterm.

.45 Auto- hell yeah.
.45 Gap?- umm no.
8/1/2013 11:04:43 AM EDT
[#12]
My stores are loaded with ammo for it. But I assume once it is gone, it will be gone.

Probably be there a while though, because it sucks.
8/1/2013 11:09:51 AM EDT
[#13]
I like the GAP, but the ACP or bust crowd has done a wonderful job of killing it.

Ammo supply can be tricky, unless you handload.

I overheard a LGS tell a customer, who wanted what the PA State Police carry, "The .45 GAP is a 1/10 of an inch away from a real round. You need a .45 ACP!!" The clerk put a G21SF into his hands and the buyer said it felt "big". The clerk told him, "That's because it's made in a MAN's cartridge, the .45 ACP!". They guy ended up buying neither, so the store did not make any money, but at least the clerk got to tell a guy his opinion.
8/1/2013 11:11:54 AM EDT
[#14]
On an AR, sure, why not.

Once the GAP is dead and buried, get after it with a .45 ACP chamber reamer.   Profit.

[#15]
i love my g38 and have no problems getting ammo
8/1/2013 11:14:22 AM EDT

Nothing wrong with GAP but like others, make sure you can cover yourself.  Im picking up about 1k tomorrow.

Damn, even a box of American Eagle, it was selling for $.63 a round. Hell no, glad I never fall for any of these boutique rounds.
8/1/2013 11:16:38 AM EDT
[#18]
Why not? You could ream it to the ACP later.

2 of my buddies had glocks in 45 GAP. Both loved the glocks but not finding or paying for the ammo.  Both had sold them with in a year.

There's more industry support for .357 Sig.  More ammo on the shelves, more guns that shoot it.

Actually getting fairly popular.  Sells more than  10mm even.

That really wouldn't be a problem for a dedicated reloader.  All the components are readily available for other calibers other than brass, and IIRC you can trim 45ACP brass down to make it.

It's not a horrible idea and I can see myself buying one if found dirt cheap.

The theory made sense in a compact firearm. So, if you are standardizing calibers and you have a carry gun in 45GAP it might make sense, assuming you handload. Other than that I can't really think of a reason to do it.

But I'm sure someone here will correct me.

Is that by rounds of ammo sold or Glocks production numbers?
8/1/2013 12:45:55 PM EDT
[#26]
i guess that is why he wants to give me a 'good deal'
8/1/2013 12:59:35 PM EDT
[#27]
Bought a G38 a couple years back.  It was an OD-frame model and I got a great deal on it when others were paying outrageous prices for OD-frame glocks.  I liked the concept of a smaller frame .45 -- a lot!  I have small hands, and while I can manage a G20/G21-sized pistol, I can't do so comfortably, or accurately when shooting fast.

IMHO there is nothing wrong with the GAP, but it was fighting an uphill battle to gain acceptance from the moment it was introduced.  When I saw the writing on the wall and realized it would never be anything other than a hard-to-get niche cartridge, I got rid of mine.

Ammo sales yes, Glock sales more than likely.  Not to many Govt contracts for 10mm glocks.

357 sig rocks. The problem with gap is that the full size guns have little to no additional capacity over a 1911.

Even 9x23 and 22 TCM would be better choices since they do things the 45ACP can't.

The GAP was only meant to do one thing the ACP can't... fit in a smaller frame (and get Gaston's name on a cartridge).  Those cartridges don't do that either.

It's a valid question. I predict except for some LE orders, it will disappear in about 4 years.  ESP if there is another panic.  Those raw materials will go towards other mainstream cartridges.

Uh, yeah, FHP uses it.  Also Georgia State Patrol, Pennsylvania State Police, and South Carolina Highway Patrol...I think NYSP does too.

I disagree.  I think there's a place for a .45 round that fits in a (roughly) 9mm-sized handgun.  Unfortunately, there just doesn't seem to be enough demand for it to justify large scale production.

And you, sir, could have just not asked the question in the first place.

A lot of niche/obsolete/quirky calibers are still manufactured in order to satisfy the people who own niche/obsolete/quirky guns.
