I've just been fucked over by Dell's warranty department, leaving me in the market for a new laptop....and I won't be buying a Dell. I'm trying to decide TODAY if I want to go HP, Lenovo, ony, or Samsung. Can you shed any light on these manufacturers or which ones to stay away from?3 I'm trying to stay under $1200.00, but there are a ton of models available in that price range. Suggestions? |

I have a Toshiba Cosmio with a dead HD...and it won't take a standard SATA 3.5" replacement HD. It's propriatary. Have they started using SATA plug HDs? It was probably a standard HDD for it's time. What you were seeing was an adapter on the HDD. I vote Toshiba first then ASUS. |

If I were buying a laptop today I would get a Toshiba.
Asus laptops are nice but with anything Asus dealing with the RMA department when you need something replaced or fixed under warranty will make you tear your hair out. Lenovo is nice and usually built like tanks. They are all made in China but find me a laptop that isn't anymore. HP.........ugh.........if I had $1 for every dead HP I've seen over the years I'd be able to retire early. Stay away from the consumer lines (you get what you pay for...cheap and WILL break before they hit 2 years old) the Pro-book line in the business class is nice though. |

Dell's warranty is actually very good, assuming you buy from the Small Business site and opt for on-site service. The Dell Home warranty is shit.
Lenovo makes pretty good hardware and their tech support is US-based. HP and Sony laptops are really flimsy and I don't recommend them. |

I'm using an Asus laptop that I picked up a few months ago. I just bought the bottom of the line model, and it's been pretty damn nice so far.
My only complaint is the two finger up and down scrolling on the touchpad. I called customer support, and there are no more drivers to change it. Took a while to get used to. |

I appreciate the input!! I just pulled the trigger on a HP ENVY 15-3040NR 15.6 Inch Laptop and will have it tomorrow. I need to deploy Wed on a new job and have to get my laptop in order first. Dell has seen fit to fuck me around when I told them the issues my laptop has should be covered under warranty...but they insist I 'damaged' it. Cocksuckers!! I told them to just send it back...and they are dragging their feet about shipping it back. The Envy I ordered looks like a nifty top-of-the-line HP and has an aluminum case. When it comes in tomorrow I'll update this thread with a range report. Thanks again you guys! |

I can personally vouch for Lenovo's Thinkpad line and Asus computers. I've heard great things about Toshibas. I've heard nothing but horrible news about HPs. Last Vaio I had was too long ago to really judge how they are today and I don't even know if I've used a Samsung. I'm using a Thinkpad E520 currently and I'm very pleased with it. I'm curious though, why up to $1,200? What exactly are you using the computer for? I can almost guarantee you you could get away with spending a lot less. |

It was a good old machine. I just couldn't find a Lenovo Thinkpad that would be delivered bu tommorow. ![]() My last computer before thie Dell was an HP. It developed a motherboard issur while I was working on the road in Ardmore, OK. I called their warranty support at about noon, they had a shipping box delivered before 5PM. I had it ready to go while the Fedex guy waited (about 3 minutes), and he took it. At 10AM the next morning, I got my HP back. It had air expressed to Cuppertino, CA, been repaired, and air expressed back to me. All in 22 hours. No shit! I was amazed to say the least. I figgured that service like that earned them another shot at my business. I use my laptop for everything from Office 10 documents, to CAD programs, to field mapping, to ham radio applications, to DoD communications applications, to burning DVD's, to watching streaming videos on the net, to video confrencing on SKYPE....and everything in between. I need a pretty robust machine that I can multi-task on...with extra monitors. |

Well....I got home this evening and found that nobody had stolen the box that had been delivered Wedensday and left on my front porch. When I ordered it Monday....Amazon said it would be here Tuesday. When I checked the order at 1:30 Tuesday afternoon....the fuckers hadn't even shipped it yet, so I cancelled the order. Amazon emails me that it's too late to cxl....but to just refuse the package. OK, then. Well, I had to jet town Wed morning until Fri afternoon. I checked Wed online and they had delivered it via Fedex....'NO SIGNATURE REQUIRED'!! I'm in a motel 4 hours from home and the goddamned $1200.00 computer is sitting on my porch!! WTF, over? So, this evening I open the box and take it out. First thing I notice is that the top cover has 2 dime sized dents in it. I ain't keeping it now, for sure. Incidentally, the factory seal was intact on the inner box, so it came from the factory that way. Contemplating a replacement or not, I plugged it in and fired it up....the display is nice....but for a 64 bit OS it's not that fast. The sound...(one of their big selling points) is mediocre.....and I'm just not very impressed overall. Sorry Amazon, sorry HP, but I want my dough back. Even without the dent issue...it's not a $1200.00 laptop. That's one great thing about Amazon, they will take returns without flipping a guy any shit. I returned a $2200.00 stereo amp last year, no questions asked. About a week later, I ended up buying the top of the line, upgrading what I returned. I did get my Dell back Tuesday....without any service work being done to it....but at least it works, so I'm back to having a work laptop. If it goes gunny bag I'll just buy something to stick my hard drive it and endeavor onwards. |
FUCK DELL, i just got an email from the dell stating our dead laptop is not covered under warranty even thought we have every(business) warranty they offer. When i initiated the service call instead of addressing the problem they first wanted to discuss extending the warranty since there was only 377 days of coverage left.
Hope you find a machine that you're happy with, god i miss the ibm thinkpad. |
